About This Item

[Toronto]: Various people, 1885. Soft Cover. Very Good+. 4 1/2 x 3 inches, about 50 pages, A new leather spine and nice new tight binding. In very good+ condition. Owned by Kitty Scott of Toronto in the 1880's. Charming little autograph album with, inscriptions, a few poems, 2 small coloured flower illustrations and of course many autographs. One of the autographs is a formerly significant person, that of of Harry Cockshutt, Brantford, in 1885.

The Hon. Harry Cockshutt (1868-1944) youngest son of Ignatius and Elizabeth (Foster) Cockshutt was educated at the Brantford High School. He was employed in the family business, the Cockshutt Plow Co. Ltd. He rose through the ranks, becoming secretary-treasurer (1888), managing director (1893) and ultimately the president. He was the president of the Frost & Wood Co. of Smith's Falls, president of the Brantford Carriage Co., president of the Adams Wagon Co., and a director of the Bank of Montreal. He was elected president of the Brantford Board of Trade in 1898, and was elected mayor of Brantford in 1899-1900. He was president of the Canadian Manufacturer's Association in 1906. He was appointed to serve as the Ontario's Lieut-Gov. (he was the 13th, serving from Sept. 1921 until Jan. 1927.). He served as the honourary Colonel of the 25th Brant Dragoons, and organized the 215th Battalion, as Lieutenant Colonel, in 1916. He belonged to several clubs: the Brantford, Toronto, National, Toronto Golf, Mount Royal (Montreal), Manitoba (Winnipeg), Hamilton and Rideau (Ottawa) clubs. "His recreations are hunting and fishing." He was married to Isabella Rolls and had two daughters. The family residence was on Dufferin Ave in Brantford. In the 1881 census for Canada, and at that time there was only one Henry/Harry Cockshutt.
