Tales of Mystery and Imagination. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

Poe, Edgar Allan.

4to. London: George C. Harrap, [1935]. 4to, 318 pp. With 12 tipped-in color illustrations by Arthur Rackham and text illustrations in black and white. Original publisher's gilt pictorial vellum, gilt top. A fine copy. § Edition de luxe, limited to 460 copies, signed by Rackham. Surely the best illustrated edition of Poe’s masterpiece ever published. Unusually dark subject matter for Rackham, he confessed to his model Marita Ross “that his pictures were now so horrible that he was beginning to frighten himself!” Though a far cry from his more familiar, whimsical works the illustrations are, as Hudson notes, “a revelation of the concealed power hinted at in Comus”. Hudson, Arthur Rackham, p. 140. Latimore & Haskell p.72.

TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION

POE EDGAR ALLAN

New York: Tudor, 1954. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. HARRY CLARKE. First Tudor Edition. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. Black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Housed in a box with an illustrated paper label on the front. The box is VG indeed, label rubbed and with a slightly soiled lid split at one corner. The book is a fine, bright copy. The D/W is also in fine condition with just a hint of rubbing and fraying in places with a minuscule chip to the top edge of the rear panel. The Arts and Crafts movement spawned a resurgence of Irish art. Harry Clarke created illustrations for Andersen and Poe from 1913 to late 1919. Clarke's eerie, sometimes gruesome illustrations appear throughout as tipped-in colour plates, in addition to numerous smaller black-and-white decorations that recall Aubrey Beardsley. This collection includes many of the tales that earned Poe his reputation as the master of the short horror story, including The Tell-Tale Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum, The Gold-Bug, The Fall of the House of Usher, the Murders of the Rue Morgue and many more. It is hard to find the book with such a nice D/W and still in the original box
