Description:
As issued, but generally poor to good. This collection was gathered by Terry Risk who visited Count Potocki in the early 1970s at his home, the Villa Vigoni, near Draguignan in the south of France. It includes a number of his printed works, all the letters back and forth, letters (some in photocopy) to other people, magazine articles by or about him, four typed unpublished manuscripts, a block of linotype for one of his cards, a collection of photographs, copies of a number of legal documents, and one broadside which he always regarded as one of the most significant gestures of his life. A partial list of the items includes: The Blood Royal of England (1966), Dog\\\'s Eggs (1971), The Fifth Columnist (1960), Lordly Lovesongs (1931), Meillerie (1972), Prison Poems (1933), Snobbery With Violence (1932), Whited Sepulchres (1936), and Wild Oats (1927). Many of these are in severely limited editions and/or are signed by him. The manuscripts are essentially autobiographical. The letters include those to… Read More

Description:
London: Boriswood, 1931. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Back-strip faded and a bit worn. 8vo. Cloth. 64pp. This is a long, and pointedly satirical, poem on many of the English literary notables of the time. As such it did not do his reputation a lot of good. The book is inscribed by the author for Issac Rousseau who became Professor of History at Rhodes University, South Africa. The inscription is dated Cape Town, Feb. 1932. The two men met, however, in 1918 where they were both at Oxford. Campbell, however, never matriculated.

Description:
Heilbronn. Hardcover. Very good . Cloth binding with string (broken). About 11 x 8 5/8 inches. 18 leaves, many with glassine interleaves. Some photographs are loose. The subject of this old family photograph album is not identified, but from internal evidence--inscriptions on the backs of the photographs--he appears to have been Karl Rieger who was born about 1905 in the German city of Heilbronn. The photographs show him as a young man with friends as he and they take walking and youth hostelling trips together. Later in preparation for joining the Luftwaffe he learns to fly gliders. Then he is seen in uniform and at his base, including in the dormitory with his fellow airmen. The base may have been near Munich because there are pictures of that city too. Finally, there are very poignant scenes of a funeral, for apparently he has been killed in action. One poignant last picture shows him as a young boy with his school class.-This album was clearly put together by a loved one. It has photographs of… Read More

Description:
New York: New York Public Library & Readex Books, 1975. First edition. Hardcover. Fine copy/fine. Large 8vo. Cloth. Pp. xvi, 362. Index and biographical index. Edited by Miriam J Benkovitz This is a remarkable feat of scholarship, with notes and biographical detail which are lively and thorough. Aldington wrote these letters to his collaborator at Oxford, Alan Bird, when he was researching the life of T. E. Lawrence. The book he wrote eventually, Lawrence of Arabia, A Biographical Enquiry, created a storm when it was published because it disputed the heroic stories which had been in large part invented, or at least mythologized, by Lawrence himself. Aldington's letters here have been scrupulously edited by Miriam J. Benkovitz who has included detailed notes which thoroughly identify the people and events involved.

Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. Back-strip faded; edges foxed; else very good copy. 8vo. Red cloth. Pp. (x), 330. Frontispiece portrait by Dame Laura Knight. Includes 8 pp. of photocopied expurgations in the author's hand. Also laid in is a 12-page Davis & Orioli booksellers' catalogue of first editions, undated but probably from the late 1930s. Pino Orioli (1884-1942) was a friend of Norman Douglas, Richard Aldington, and D. H. Lawrence. In 1928 he undertook to publish in Italy the first edition ofLady Chatterley's Lover, in an unexpurgated edition of 1000 copies. Later, he had a bookshop at 30 Museum Street, London. This memoir had included various imprudent comments about his experiences as a gay man. But because such activities were illegal in Britain in the 1930s, discretion forbade them to be published and so they were excised. However the manuscript still exists, and these photocopies show what was expurgated: "Mr. Bartlett … offered me a drink, asked what… Read More

Also included is a genuine Leica IIIA rangefinder camera, made by Ernst Leitz of Wetzlar, Germany, in 1938. The serial number is 278201 and was one of 19,850 made that year. The model IIIA began to be produced in 1935 but was suspended during the War, then resumed until 1948. In design it was identical to the III which had introduced slower shutter speeds, lugs for carrying the camera, and an increased rangefinder magnification to 1.5x. The main addition to the IIIA was the shutter speed of 1/1000th. The lens on this camera, which is collapsible and has a bayonet mount, is the Summar 50 mm, 1:2. It was manufactured between 1933 and 1940, and it has the serial number of 422174. A lens cap is present. The camera is in very good condition, except for the black leather which is split and partially separated from the body. Also, some of the leather around one lug is missing. The shutter works on all… Read More
