Description:
, 1848; Large (16 3/4" x 21") two-page indenture by which Ann E. Venicomb conveys to Isaac Darnel, both of Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, a tract of land in Evesham of approximately twenty one acres, bordered by lands of Daniel W. Lippincott, Joseph Even, Rachel Boggs, et. al., Note is taken that the land had come to Venicomb by deed from her sister Rachel E. Boggs, wife of Ossley (Ashley?) Boggs, as part of her late mother’s trust. Boundaries, corner points, and various landmarks are annotated. A note on the front adds that the courses and distances were taken from the old version in the year 1813. Signed by both parties, affixed with a seal, and witnessed by Ezra Evans, Commyssioner (sic) for the County of Burlington, September 12, 1848. Accompanying the deed is a hand drawn survey map of a twenty-plus acre plot, noting it is a "draft taken from several different deeds and not from actual running," and dated March 31, 1850 by Wm. W. Wills. The map is most… Read More

Description:
New York: Politics Publishing Co, 1946. Magazine. Stapled wraps, 8.5 x 11 inches. Lightly worn, staples rusted. Near-fine.. A bright copy of this uncommon publication of Simone Weil's (1909-1943) essay "Factory Work." During the years 1934-1935 ("hard and bitter years of economic crisis" in France), Weil set out to experience and document the "proletarian condition" of France's laborers in the factories of suburban Paris. As a result of her experiences Weil concluded that "our factories have become festering grounds of evil, and the evils of the factories must be corrected." Weil's essay records her appeal for the good over the useful, the qualitative over the quantitative, goodness over well-being-in sum, for a fundamental purpose over mere utilitarian function. Dwight Macdonald (1906-1982) published Weil's essay in the December 1946 issue of politics, a magazine he founded in 1944 and which began as a monthly publication until its fourth year, after which it ran as a quarterly. Macdonald launched… Read More

Monthly' is an examination of how the Ku Klux Klan's use of print media was a means to maintain and grow economic power in early 20th century Birmingham. In the book form, I make this argument by presenting my original research and including representations of the primary source documents. My method of reproducing an edition of a Klan-published newspaper removes any power the propaganda once had, and the object now serves to reveal the true intention of the newspaper and acts as a record of Klan affiliation. In taking this document from the archives and reproducing it in this manner, I aim to shed light on this history and use the power of my… Read More
