About This Item

1722 Piazza INQUISITION 1ed Catholic turned Anglican RARE Torture Heretics

Girolamo Bartolomeo Piazza was an 18th-century Italian Catholic who converted to Anglicanism. After moving from Italy and living in England, Piazza wrote a vehement attack on Catholicism and the Roman Inquisition while serving as an Italian teacher at Cambridge. (Forester). "A Short and True Account of the Inquisition" was published in London in 1722 and describes the makeup of Catholic politics and hierarchy – the inquisitors, the Dominican Order, the selection of popes, bishops, arch-bishops, and cardinals, and how the powers of authority are given.

This fine 1722 first edition of a curiously difficult book to obtain was published by William and William Bowyer. In fact, this is likely one of the their first works published as they began working together in 1722. Note that this edition was published in both English and French on opposite pages.
