About This Item

New York: Capricorn, 1958. Softcover. Very Good with uniform age toning in pictorial wraps.. 12mo., 237 pp. Notes. Somewhat scarce mass market paperback bearing the cover art of illustrator Edward Gorey . Semiautobiographical memoir by Rilke. 1910 novel by Austrian poet Rilke. First published as The Journal of My Other Self, it was the only work of prose of considerable length that he wrote and published. It is semiautobiographical and is written in an expressionistic style, with existentialist themes. It was conceptualized and written whilst Rilke lived in Paris, mainly inspired by Sigbj¿rn Obstfelder's A Priest's Diary and Jens Peter Jacobsen's Niels Lyhne. Translated from the original German by M. D. Herter Norton. Originally. published in 1949, this is the First Edition from Capricorn Books with the Gorey cover from 1958 [First, Thus].

Synopsis

A masterly new translation of one of the first great modernist novels In the only novel by one of the German language's greatest poets, a young man named Malte Laurids Brigge lives in a cheap room in Paris while his belongings rot in storage. Every person he sees seems to carry their death with them, and with little but a library card to distinguish him from the city's untouchables, he thinks of the deaths, and ghosts, of his aristocratic family, of which he is the sole living descendant. Suffused with passages of lyrical brilliance, Rilke's semi-autobiographical novel is a moving and powerful coming-of-age story.
