About This Item
University of Chicago Press, 1963. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Association copy, signed by Schaller on the title page and belonging to noted naturalist and primatologist Charles Southwick, former chair of the biology department at Colorado University, with his ownership signature and below it "personal copy." Schaller's first book, and the first book to show the general public the great intelligence of gorillas. Ex-library, with a stamp from the Library of Comparative Behavior at John Hopkins University (where Southwick previously taught). Very good book with bumps to a few corners and a little squiggle on the FFEP and on the dedication page (dedicated to Olaus Murie) in red pen that seem like they were made by a child. Some library tape residue to top of the front board. Price-clipped jacket is good/very good with several prominent chips, one atop each panel and on the spine. Tape repairs to rear panel. An uncommon signature and nice association between prominent ecologists and men who studied great apes. Schaller won the National Book Award in Science for *The Serengeti Lion*, and is of course a ethological legend (one thinks of his journey with Peter Matthiessen in The Snow Leopard, which also won a National Book Award). // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in nature writing and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
