Synopsis

Alan Hollinghurst is an English novelist and winner of the 2004 Booker Prize for The Line of Beauty. Set in the United Kingdom in the early to mid-1980s, the story encompasses the post-Oxford life of the young gay protagonist, Nick Guest, who searches for beauty in everything around him while being less than perfect himself. The book explores the tensions between Nick's intimate relationship with the Feddens, in whose parties and holidays he participates, and the realities of his sexuality and gay life, which the Feddens accept but do not go to the extent of mentioning. The book considers themes of hypocrisy, homosexuality and wealth while exploring the difference between spiritual and material beauty.
