Fifth printing of the new edition. Volume one contains a portrait frontispiece. A collection of essays from French philosopher, Michel de Montaigne, considered one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance and known for popularising the essay as a literary genre. Contains essays on sadness, affections, idleness, ceremonies, the power of imagination, judgement, friendship, moderation, and much more. With notes on the works. Bound in half green calf with green cloth boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good
