New York: John Low, 1817. First Edition . Full-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Volume 2 of 2 volumes. Scarce early historical biographies of 27 figures - Pike, Lawrence, Perry, DeCatur, Jackson, Scott, Hull, Dearborn, et al. (Howes: Wilson, 538). First Edition. 320 pp. Full leather covers heavily rubbed & worn smooth . Red leather label with still readable gilt title on spine. Corners bumped with some loss of leather. Spine tattered and severly worn at head and tail. There is a split where front cover meets spine, but this doesn't seem to be affecting the integrity of the binding. While it hasn't yet occurred , the potential exists for detachment of the front board. The first f.e.p. has a one inch strip across the top of page neatly excised, probably from a previous owner removing their name. A previous owner's name neatly written in script on second f.e.p. Pages heavily browned from offsetting and foxing, but still very readable. The leaf containing the table of contents and part of an advertisement (reads more like an essay) is loose and wrinkled. A few pages are lightly wrinkled or dog-eared. There are a couple of errors of pagination by the publisher or printer; following the text allows the reader to understand this is not a result of pages being bound out of order or a hasty repair. First Edition from 1817 .

Description:
Göttingen: Steidl, 2017. Revised Steidl edition (first published as two volumes in 1977). This large format recreates the full original sequence of photos in one volume for the first time. Rich with 100 images illustrating Eggleston's pilgrimage from Memphis to the small town of Plains, Georgia (home of Jimmy Carter), where in November 1976 Carter was elected 39th President of the United States. Lonesome roads, train tracks, cars, gas stations and houses... 340 x 260 mm (13½ x 10¼ inches). In a very good condition - both inside and out. Lloyd Fonvielle says in the book's introduction: 'The photographs have a quietude and unsentimental romanticism, as well as an edge of poignance, which belie the expectations of hopefulness or portentousness suggested by a knowledge of the time and place in which they were made. On the eve of the election, when nothing had yet been decided, when everything - whatever that everything was -hung in the balance, Eggleston made an elegy... a statement of perfect calm'.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
