Very early title in the author's widely acclaimed mystery series (which ran 1909-1942) featuring scholarly, bookish, New York City detective Fleming Stone. In 309 pages + ads for other titles in rear, color frontispiece by Robert McCaig. Orig. published in 1913/14 by Lippincott, this is a slightly later (undated) reprint from A. L. Burt (First, thus), with old gift inscription to ffep placing it no later than 1917. Hardcover12mo has light blue-green cloth-covered boards stamped in darker blue lettering & design to front & spine. Condition is just Fair-Good: heavy rubbing to extremities with much fraying. Text block solid, but binding cracked at second free endpaper. Pages creamy white & unmarked with age-appropriate tanning. No DJ (missing).
