New York: Schocken Books, Inc, 1971. First US edition. Octavo. Original green cloth and dust jacket (not price-clipped). Laid-in is an inscribed notecard by Alasdair MacIntyre to fellow Brandeis professor, Henry D. Aiken: "Henry / With love and regard / from Alasdair," with the Brandeis University name and emblem affixed to card. Fine in fine dust jacket.. A fine first edition of Alasdair MacIntyre's (b. 1929) Against the Self-Images of the Age: Essays on Ideology and Philosophy with tipped-in inscription to fellow Brandeis professor, Henry D. Aiken. In this work, the author of the 1981 groundbreaking work After Virtue offers a poignant critique of organized Christianity, Marxism, and psychoanalysis for their failure to express the forms of thought and action that constitute our contemporary social life, and argues that a greater understanding of our complex modern world can only be achieved by a more thorough inquiry into the philosophy of the social sciences. First published in the US by Schocken Books in 1971, Against the Self-Images of the Age anticipates many of the critical themes that MacIntyre would explore ten years later in his masterpiece After Virtue. This fine first edition is all the more remarkable for containing MacIntyre's laid-in inscription to Henry D. Aiken, a renowned authority on esthetics and ethics who served as a professor of philosophy at Brandeis University.

Description:
1662 Stillingfleet Irenicum Anglican Church Government vs Presbyterian ENGLISH

Edward Stillingfleet was a 17th-century British theologian known for his defensive views on Anglicanism. His first work, which (negatively) set the tone for his literary career, was 'The Irenicum', a work which advocated for compromise between the Presbyterian and Anglican Orthodox churches. While the root of the work is founded in theological church models and structures, Stillingfleet covers a variety of philosophical ideas including the state of natural law.

"'The Irenicum' was set forth the assuage the spirit of sectarian bitterness; it was an attempt to show that there was no plan of Church Order laid down in the New Testament; and it bears just as strongly against notions of divine institution of Presbyterianism."

'Irenicum' was published before the church was re-established and contributed to debates about ecclesiastical restoration by showing the legitimacy of obeying… Read More

1694 Spanish Inquisition History of Cardinal Ximenes Catholic Church Flechier 2v
Esprit Fléchier was a 17th-century French author who composed two important historical works – the histories of Cardinal Ximenes and Emperor Theodosius I – which are known to be highly accurate and insightful. While known primarily for his written sermons, spiritual memoires, and religious writings, these historical works have been Flechier's most desirable works.
This book, 'Histoire de Cardinal Ximenes', is considered one of the best works on the life of the 15th-century Spanish cardinal. This work is also notable for describing the reforms during the Spanish Inquisition.
