The Ukrainian readers became first acquainted with Jack London's works in 1913, when the magazine Visnyk kul'tury i zhyttya [i.e. Herald of Culture and Life] printed the translation of London's Batar [i.e. Batard] by the writer and political activist Ivan Steshenko (1873-1918). After 1917, the Ukrainian press witnessed the publication of London's multiple writings, the number of which reached its peak by the late-1920s. The poster was made around the time the Red Army was approaching to take the full control over Ukraine. The text says: 'The Red calvary has defeated Mamontov, Shkuro, Denikin, lords and Petlyura. Now it's time to crash Vrangel. Workers and peasants, join the Red Calvary'. This poster is famous not only because of the design but because it was printed on the banknotes of the Bank of Ukraine. These are the notes that were used by Petlyura government in 1918-1919. By February 1919 Kiev was captured by Red Army and the rolls of unused banknotes were used for making posters.
