Otherwise in a very good condition. Scarce. First edition. Translated from English. Original version published in 1912. The first Ukrainian translation of Jack London's novel 'The Scarlet Plague' with remarkable avant-garde wrapper design. The Ukrainian readers became first acquainted with Jack London's works in 1913, when the magazine Visnyk kul'tury i zhyttya [i.e. Herald of Culture and Life] printed the translation of London's Batar [i.e. Batard] by the writer and political activist Ivan Steshenko (1873-1918). After 1917, the Ukrainian press witnessed the publication of London's multiple writings, the number of which reached its peak by the late-1920s. During 1927-1932, the publishing house Syayvo [i.e. A Word] issued a twenty-seven brochure-size volume collection of Jack London's works. The publication was prepared by the…

Description:
Kiev: 2ya Radyanska foto-lito-grukarnia, 1920. 75x55 cm. Rebacked and restored, otherwise very good. The poster was made around the time the Red Army was approaching to take the full control over Ukraine. The text says: 'The Red calvary has defeated Mamontov, Shkuro, Denikin, lords and Petlyura. Now it's time to crash Vrangel. Workers and peasants, join the Red Calvary'. This poster is famous not only because of the design but because it was printed on the banknotes of the Bank of Ukraine. These are the notes that were used by Petlyura government in 1918-1919. By February 1919 Kiev was captured by Red Army and the rolls of unused banknotes were used for making posters.

Description:
Ibidem Press, 2023. New Book. Paperback, 200 pp. When Megan Buskey's grandmother Anna dies in Cleveland in 2013, Megan is compelled in her grief to uncover and document her grandmother's life as a native of Ukraine. A Ukrainian American, Buskey returns to her family's homeland and enlists her relatives there to help her in her quest―and discovers much more than she expected. The result is an extraordinary journey that traces one woman's story across Ukraine's difficult twentieth century, from a Galician village emerging from serfdom, to the "bloodlands" of Eastern Europe during World War II, to the Siberian hinterlands where Anna spent almost two decades in exile before receiving the rare opportunity to emigrate from the Soviet Union in the 1960s. In the course of her research, Megan encounters essential and sometimes disturbing aspects of recent Ukrainian history, such as Nazi collaboration, the rise and persistence of Ukrainian nationalism, and the shattering impact of Russia's full-scale…

Description:
Oxford University Press, USA, 2007. New Book. Paperback. 320 pp. In 2004 and 2005, striking images from the Ukraine made their way around the world, among them boisterous, orange-clad crowds protesting electoral fraud and the hideously scarred face of a poisoned opposition candidate. Europe's second-largest country but still an immature state only recently independent, Ukraine has become a test case of post-communist democracy, as millions of people in other countries celebrated the protesters' eventual victory. Any attempt to truly understand current events in this vibrant and unsettled land, however, must begin with the Ukraines dramatic history. Ukraine's strategic location between Russia and the West, the country's pronounced cultural regionalism, and the ugly face of post-communist politics are all anchored in Ukraine's complex past. The first Western survey of Ukrainian history to include coverage of the Orange Revolution and its aftermath, this book narrates the deliberate construction…

Description:
Bloomsbury Academic, 2023. New Book. Paperback. 264 pp. with ills. Bottom of the cover is slightly wrinkled. Ukrainian Cinema: Belonging and Identity during the Soviet Thaw is the first concentrated study of Ukrainian cinema in English. In particular, historian Joshua First explores the politics and aesthetics of Ukrainian Poetic Cinema during the Soviet 1960s-70s. He argues that film-makers working at the Alexander Dovzhenko Feature Film Studio in Kiev were obsessed with questions of identity and demanded that the Soviet film industry and audiences alike recognize Ukrainian cultural difference. The first two chapters provide the background on how Soviet cinema since Stalin cultivated an exoticised and domesticated image of Ukrainians, along with how the film studio in Kiev attempted to rebuild its reputation during the early Sixties as a centre of the cultural thaw in the USSR. The next two chapters examine Sergei Paradjanov's highly influential Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) and its role…

Description:
University of Wisconsin Press, 2015. New Book. Paperback. 290 pp. What happens to ethnic communities when they have two homelands to love-one real and immediate, the other distant but treasured in the heart and imagination? Ukrainian Otherlands is an innovative exploration of modern ethnic identity, focused on diaspora/homeland understandings of each other in Ukraine and in Ukrainian ethnic communities around the globe. Exploring a rich array of folk songs, poetry and stories, trans-Atlantic correspondence, family histories, and rituals of homecoming and hosting that developed in the Ukrainian diaspora and Ukraine during the twentieth century, Natalia Khanenko-Friesen asserts that many important aspects of modern ethnic identity form, develop, and reveal themselves not only through the diaspora's continued yearning for the homeland, but also in a homeland's deeply felt connection to its diaspora. Yet, she finds each group imagines the "otherland" and ethnic identity differently, leading to…

Description:
Arcadia Publishing Library Editions, 2006. New Book. Hardcover. 130 pp., ills. Ukrainians arrived in Chicagoland in four distinct waves: 1900-1914, 1923-1939, 1948-1956, and 1990-2006. At the beginning of the 20th century, immigrants from Ukraine came to Chicago seeking work, and in 1905, a Ukrainian American religio-cultural community, now officially named Ukrainian Village, was formally established. Barely conscious of their ethnonational identity, Ukraine's early immigrants called themselves Rusyns (Ruthenians). Thanks to the socio-educational efforts of Eastern-rite Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox priests, some Rusyns began calling themselves Ukrainians, developing a distinct national identity in concert with their brethren in Ukraine.

Description:
Random House Trade, 2018. New Book. Paperback. 384 pp. A long-awaited English translation of the groundbreaking oral history of women in World War II across Europe and Russia--from the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. For more than three decades, Svetlana Alexievich has been the memory and conscience of the twentieth century. When the Swedish Academy awarded her the Nobel Prize, it cited her invention of "a new kind of literary genre," describing her work as "a history of emotions . . . a history of the soul." In The Unwomanly Face of War, Alexievich chronicles the experiences of the Soviet women who fought on the front lines, on the home front, and in the occupied territories. These women--more than a million in total--were nurses and doctors, pilots, tank drivers, machine-gunners, and snipers. They battled alongside men, and yet, after the victory, their efforts and sacrifices were forgotten. Alexievich traveled thousands of miles and visited more than a hundred towns to record these…

Description:
Assouline, 2021. New Book. Hardcover. 336 pp., ill. In French. Art Collector, Igor Vitalyevich Savitsky dedicated his life to saving one of the world's most important works of Russian avant-garde art, which would have been otherwise destined to disappear forever. His efforts allowed artists, obscured by Stalin's regime, to be rediscovered. Today, the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named after I.V. Savitsky in Nukus, and located in the middle of a vast desert on the northwest end of Uzbekistan-once called "the Louvre of the Steppes-now holds one of the largest collections of this art, second only to the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. This volume shows a particularly unique part of the museum's collection, known as Avant-Garde Orientalist art: works made between 1910 - 1930 from artists who have traveled or moved to Uzbekistan, discovering the region's culture, vibrant colors, unique light, landscapes and architecture. Rather than simply being seen as instruments of state…
