Judah was the second Jew admitted to the Bar of Lower and Upper Canada, one month after Aaron Ezekiel Hart (1803-1857) was received in November 1824. He was born in Trois-Rivières, Francheville, QC.Aaron Ezekiel Hart was thus the first Jew to be called to the bar in either of the Canadas in 1824 at 21 years old. His singular position was short-lived, however, since the following month a distant cousin, Thomas Storrs Judah (1804-95), was similarly called, as was Thomas's brother Henry Hague Judah (1808-83) four years later in 1829.

He was mainly self-taught, but he did work with his father. MacDonald was colour blind and as a result he worked primarily in black and white. As an illustrator, MacDonald worked for the Ryerson Press and Canadian Forum magazine.
