Washington (DC): US Coast Survey, 1866. All four (thin paper) sheets, b&w with folds as issued, very good or better, with almost no browning or foxing. These are from the 1866 report of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey. Alexander Dallas Bache, then superintendent of the survey, was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin. These sheets are all dated 1864 on the charts themselves. All have elaborate depth soundings and sailing directions. The images range in size from 58 x 74 cm to 98 x 56 cm, with various topographers and hydrographers. The four sheets are: 1. From entrance to Piney Point; 2. From Piney Point to lower Cedar Point; 3. From lower Cedar Point to Indian Head; 4. From Indian Head to Georgetown. The sheets are numbered on verson 20-23. . Very Good. Map.

Hamburg: Fuchs, 1914. Very good, on thin paper, with original color, folds as issued (now flattened with some archival tape repair at folds on verso). Mild foxing most evident n lower margin. These maps, often ephemeral in nature, are now all increasingly scarce. Although the date on the map is 1870, it was published by Fuchs ("Verlag von Chs. Fuchs' lith. Inst. Hamburg" in lower right margin just outside neatline), and the text in the lower margin is in both German and French. The map image measures 24 x 38 cm. on a sheet 36 x 46 cm. There is a second title within the neatline: Carte drôlatique d'Europe pour 1870.. First Edition Thus.

US Government Printing Office, 1891. B&W as issued, map bound into book in 2 parts, divided midway east-west (i.e. north and south map segments). If sheets were joined, the full image would measure 18.5x26 inches. This is a rather detailed route map for this ship, issued in conjunction with the fisheries report, with Nova Scotia, Sable Island, Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine and more. .

Gotha: Justus Perthes , 1878. Fine, with printed color. 4 strkingly colored plates on one sheet, detailing seasonal temperature variations in Germany. This has extensive commercial implications for the times. It comes from Petermann's "Geographische Mitteilungen". Petermann was a major figure in the 19th century explosion of thematic mapping (see Robinson: EARLY THEMATIC MAPPING...). He apprenticed with Steiler and later helped with the maps of Johnston's PHYSICAL ATLAS... (initially issued as a tribute to Berghaus). The map measures 10.75x13.5 inches (27.5x34.5cm). .

London: Charles Tilt, Fleet Street, 1834. Interior excellent, with all 59 engraved views present with minimal foxing and original tissue guards. Rebound with cloth, new endpapers; gilt-edged as issued; 118pp plus adv. Plates of many parts of England incl. Manchester, York, Bath, Greenwich and others (second series). Covers scuffed, rubbed, slight stain lower front cover, but binding reasonably tight and all tipped-in maps in excellent condition. Philips' company put out several commercial atlases at about this time, updating geographical and commercial information resulting from the enormous changes related to WWII. This is a heavy book, and as usual, an impressive thematic atlas. An extensive index is present.. Cloth. Very Good. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.
