About This Item

San Francisco: Dewing Company, 1888. This offering is from the deluxe 1888 (first) ELEPHANT FOLIO edition (San Francisco, Dewing Company) of PICTURESQUE CALIFORNIA by Muir, with all the intact text (pp 265-84) with small mounted litho's and small text lithos, plus the accompanying full-page original etching ("The Olympian range from Victoria" by Schilling from painting by Keith) and the 5 full page photogravures ("Mount Ranier..." from Keith painting, "Snooqualmie Falls" from Gay painting, "Tatoosh Mountains" from Penard painting, "The Nisqually Glacier" from Speil drawing of Keith painting, "After the Hop-Harvest" from Durkin painting). The item is in wonderful condition, and the 6 single items listed all have their original, printed tissue guards. The original etching is one of 15 in the entire set. The etchings and photogravures all measure approx. 7.5x10 inches, then are mounted on much larger elephant-folio boards. There are 2 small tears on the mounting boards, no where near the images themselves, and could be easily repaired, trimmed or matted. The section of text offered is by Muir himself. There is virtually no foxing or browning, but there is some offsetting from one or two of the smaller plates mounted into the text (not the 6 larger described above). This is a wonderful regional set from this striking publication, which was issued as 10 separate elephant-folio sections (this is from Section VI, plates LXVII to LXII).. First Edition. Very Good. Illus. by Various (see below). Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.
