New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1931. First Edition. 8vo, publisher's original gray cloth over red boards, lettered in red on the spine, decorated endleaves. 380 pp. A handsome, sound and pleasing copy, well preserved. FIRST EDITION OF WILLIAM FAULKNER'S CONTROVERSIAL NOVEL ABOUT RAPE. 'Faulkner wrote this novel about the rape and abduction of an upper-class Mississippi college girl, Temple Drake, during the Prohibition era. The novel was Faulkner's commercial and critical breakthrough and established his literary reputation, but was controversial given its themes. It is said Faulkner claimed it was a "potboiler", written purely for profit, but this has been debated by scholars and Faulkner's own friends. The novel provided the basis for the films The Story of Temple Drake (1933) and Sanctuary (1961). It also inspired the novel No Orchids for Miss Blandish as well as the film of the same title and The Grissom Gang, which derived from No Orchids for Miss Blandish. The story… Read More

London: Hurst and Blackett, 1904. Early printing. With a large folding map and 135 illustrations. 8vo, original sienna polished cloth gilt lettered and pictorially decorated in black and yellow on the spine and decorated and lettered in black and yellow on the upper cover. xv, 503. A fresh and desirable copy of this scarce and important work, pages 13-28 with either a chip or neat repair along the bottom margin not effecting the text in any way, head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and with a small chip. VERY SCARCE AND IMPORTANT WORK BY STEIN. In 1900-1901 Stein excavated several ruined sites in the Taklamakan Desert around Khotan, publishing his experiences in SAND-BURIED RUINS OF KHOTAN. This would be the first of two expeditions which would lead to his being awarded the Founder's Gold Medal by the Royal Geographic Society. The rare account of Stein’s first great Central Asian expedition. Stein followed in the footsteps of Sven Hedin, who in 1893 had found unexplored ruins at… Read More

Description:
New York: Viking, 1988. First American edition. 8vo, black cloth and boards in the dustjacket. 547. Very fine. A unique book in the history of modern literature, in that its publication resulted in a death sentence for the author being decreed by Islamic fundamentalists (which is still in effect). Inspired in part by the life of Muhammad, Rushdie used magical realism and relied on contemporary events and people to create his characters. In the United Kingdom, The Satanic Verses received positive reviews, and was a 1988 Booker Prize Finalist and won the 1988 Whitbread Award for novel of the year. However, conservative Muslims accused it of blasphemy and mocking their faith. The outrage among them resulted in a fatw calling for Rushdie's death issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran. The result was several failed assassination attacks on Rushdie, who was placed under police protection.

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, Limited, 1905. 2 volumes. First edition. Beautifully decorated with many illustrations, maps and battle diagrams. Large 8vo, publisher’s original ribbed navy-blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, t.e.g. ix, 423; 437, index pp. A very good and handsome set, bindings and textblocks clean, hinges strong and tight, just some mellowing to the cloth and light evidence of age but in all very well preserved. FIRST EDITION IN HANDSOME CONDITION. In this work, as well as through its predecessor entitled THE INFLUENCE OF SEA POWER UPON HISTORY, 1660-1783, Mahan demonstrates the considerable ties between naval warfare and the history of the modern world. He was one of the first historians ever to seriously examine this correlation. This treatise had a lasting influence upon American military thought, helping to convince our leaders that a strong navy was a necessity (as it subsequently proved to be, in two world wars).
