About This Item
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1980. First edition, third impression. Extensively illustrated on black and white glossy plates. Large, tall 8vo, in the publisher's originl navy blue patterned paper-covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt, in the original dustjacket. xxi, 665 pp. A very fine copy of this large tome, the jacket is still extremely fresh and handsome looking in spite of a few small closed tears neatly repaired. HUNTFORD'S AMBITIOUS DUELING NARRATIVES OF THE TWO MEN WHO RACED FOR THE SOUTH POLE. Expertly researched and full of material drawn from contemporary sources Huntford's book is an excellent choice if you are looking for a single history of the famous race between British Capt. Robert F. Scott and Norwegian Roald Amundsen. For Amundsen the race would be a world-renown triumph, for Scott a failure that would cost him his life.
