International Union For Conservation Of Nature And Natural Resources, 2010. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A commemorative volume co-edited by the winners of the 2010 Goteberg Award for sustainability, considered the environmental equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Association copy, inscribed on the front end free paper by one of the winners/co-editors to a colleague: "To Bill Karp, with my very best wishes, Kenneth Sherman, 3/14/11." Bill Karp was the head of the NOAA Fisheries' Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole before his retirement in 2016. Previously he was the deputy director of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Kenneth Sherman was the director of NOAA Fisheries Office of Marine Ecosystems Studies and of the NOAA Fisheries Laboratory in Narragansett, Rhode Island. As the Goteberg award citation notes: "In the 1980s, Dr. Sherman, together with others, pioneered the concept of large marine ecosystems (LMEs). Description:
NY: Simon & Schuster, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An association copy, inscribed on the half title page: "To Pat Moynihan, with warm regards, Dillon Ripley." Laid in also is Ripley's card.  Moynihan was a four-term US Senator from NY from 1977 to 2001 who, among other many other activities and accomplishments, served for a stint as the chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. Earlier, as a counselor to President Richard Nixon, he also wrote an incredibly on-the-mark memo to Congress in 1969 about the dangers of carbon dioxide to climate change--a very early public alarm that it seems is seldom recognized in the sweep of climate change advocacy.  Sidney Dillon Ripley was an ornithologist, a wildlife conservationist, and for twenty years the Secretary of the Smithsonian, leading the charge to reinvigorate and expand the institution. He was an expert on rails (the waterfowl) and birds in Asia. He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom. This title was his primary… Read More

Viking Adult, 1985. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Association copy, inscribed on the half title page: "To Joe [Meeker] from Paul, with an Ursus hug." Uncommon signed. With an afterword by Gary Snyder. A great association between influential environmental writers: Shepard is known for his wide-ranging contributions to deep ecological thought, especially the "Pleistocene paradigm," and was recognized with Guggenheim and Rockefeller grants. Joseph Meeker is credited with originating the idea of ecocriticism, which he first called literary ecology in his influential book *The Comedy of Survival: Studies in Literary Ecology* (1972). A very near fine book with a hint of dusting to top face of text block; in a very good jacket with some creasing and very short tears to top of rear panel. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Description:
Philadelphia: Ferris & Leach, 1902. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. With the long secondary subtitle of "Being a Quaker Maiden's Account of her Experiences with Officers of the Continental Army-1777-1778." Inscribed in pencil on the front fee endpaper: "Amos, from Dan.* Xmas 1902 With the compliments of her relative. *Owen Wister." It appears the entire inscription is in Owen Wister's hand, that he wrote it as a gift inscription to be given by a friend to another friend.  Perhaps unique signed by Wister, and an uncommon book in general with only one other copy available at the time of this writing. With the bookplate on the pastedown of Amos Tuck French, a prominent banker, director fo he Northern Pacific Railway, and New York society man. Owen Wister is duly famous as the author of The Virginian, the seminal Western. Sally Wister (1761-1804) is known for this journal, her firsthand nine-month account of living in the countryside near Philadelphia while it was occupied by the British during… Read More

Advanced uncorrected proof, softcover, inscribed on the front end free paper: "For Joe Libs [sp?], with all my thanks for this unlikely bestseller -- Joan Didion, April 7 83." Description:
SF: San Francisco Arts Festival, 1963. First edition. Loose leaf. Fine. A 14 x 21 inch folio containing eight broadsides produced at various small presses and printers, each signed by the poet and illustrator. It was offered for sale by Donald Allen's Four Seasons Foundation (the Foundation's true first publishing project, apparently, though that's often said to be the Freeway broadsides of 1964). An orange letterpress prospectus from Four Seasons is included that finishes: "Each broadside is signed by the poet and artist. Limited to an edition of 300, of which we have a few remaining sets we are offering ..." Yet it seems clear that not all sets or broadsides were actually signed. Notably, here Lew Welch's signature is present on his "Early Summer Hermit Song," which is scarce. Almost all of the copies of this broadside that we've seen have been only signed by the illustrator, if that. "Early Summer Hermit Song" was Welch's second solo publication following Wobbly Rock.   The folio includes the… Read More

NY: WW Norton, 1994. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Inscribed by Norman Myers on the front free endpaper: "Kate Brown--good colleague and fine friend! Best wishes, Norman Myers." Uncommon signed. A transcript of an influential debate between Myers, a prominent environmentalist, and Simon, an economist and skeptic of environmentalism. The debate took place at Columbia University in 1992. Both wrote opening statements for the event and, afterward, wrote post-debate statements, all of which is included here. From the rear jacket copy: "Humankind does not know whether Simon is right, or Myers. We must come to know. Our collective existence could hang in the balance." Norman Myers (1934-2019) was a prominent British environmentalist who was known especially for highlighting the importance of "biodiversity hotspots," and he also trained his eye on the prospect of environmental refugees.
