About This Item

International Union For Conservation Of Nature And Natural Resources, 2010. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A commemorative volume co-edited by the winners of the 2010 Goteberg Award for sustainability, considered the environmental equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Association copy, inscribed on the front end free paper by one of the winners/co-editors to a colleague: "To Bill Karp, with my very best wishes, Kenneth Sherman, 3/14/11." Bill Karp was the head of the NOAA Fisheries' Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole before his retirement in 2016. Previously he was the deputy director of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Kenneth Sherman was the director of NOAA Fisheries Office of Marine Ecosystems Studies and of the NOAA Fisheries Laboratory in Narragansett, Rhode Island. As the Goteberg award citation notes: "In the 1980s, Dr. Sherman, together with others, pioneered the concept of large marine ecosystems (LMEs). Sherman and his colleagues recognized that large areas of the oceans function as ecosystems and that pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, habitat degradation, toxic pollution, aerosol contamination and over-exploitation of living resources, along with natural factors, influenced the varying productivity of these ecosystems." He split the prize in 2010 with Costa Rican activist Randall Arauz, and co-edited this commemorative volume with him. Among the twelve chapters by scientists and others, notably there's a chapter by Al Gore, "What goes up, must come down." Near fine hardcover with minor bumps and wear to corners, otherwise crisp and straight. No dust jacket as issued. Blue matte-finish paper boards. Scarce signed. We invite you to explore our dedicated, growing collection of signed and inscribed climate change books, including many association copies.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
