Description:
First Edition, First Printing (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1995). Fine in a fine dust jacket; as new. Signed by John Updike on the front free endpaper. Scarce thus. The beautiful Everman's Library edition; the first time all four Rabbit novels were published in one volume. Comprising Rabbit Run, Rabbit Redux, Rabbit is Rich, and Rabbit at Rest. A wonderful and sharp looking compendium of the four novels following life's ups-and-downs of Updike's now iconic character, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom!

Rabbit, Run, published in 1960, established Updike as one of the major American novelists of his generation. In that first novel, the reader follows three months in the life of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a 26-year-old former high school basketball player who is trapped in a loveless marriage and a boring sales job, and experiences Rabbit's attempts to escape the constraints of his life. In the next three novels in the series Updike takes a comical and retrospective look at the relentless questing life of Rabbit… Read More

Description:
First American edition of the author's contentious fourth novel, which was expurgated following its seizure in England. Near fine in tan buckram stamped black, lacking dust jacket. Square and tight with no cocking. Title-page verso bears a copyright date of 1915, while the title-page is dated 1916. Roberts gives date of publication as 15 November 1915, complicating issues by noting that Huebsch "published a more expensive edition of The Rainbow in 1916 [A7 note, p28]." The second and third printings from Huebsch however are explicitly dated 1921 & 1922 respectively. Copies with a 1915 title-page, if they ever did exist, appear not to have survived. A brilliant copy of the first American edition, cloth fresh, stamping vivid; 'marred' solely by an ink name neat at crown. 8vo. 480pp]: [x], 470 (last leaf blank). Rare in such exemplary condition.

Description:
First Edition, First Printing. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. First state dust jacket with the cellophane on the front missing. McCullers' 2nd book, a southern melodrama. Fine in original two-toned decorated cloth and an almost fine first state dust jacket with the original $2.00 price on the front flap. This poorly conceived jacket has an acetate "window," a rectangle cut out on the upper panel that reveals the "Reflections in a Golden Eye" title on the cover of the book below. Almost every copy of this jacket is compromised by the sizing up or shrinking of the acetate over time causing tears and disintegration to the jacket and window. This copy is one of the best we've seen, with a short, closed tear at the upper front fold and top but is otherwise nearly flawless. The binding is tight, and the boards are solid with light wear to the edges. The pages are clean, with no writing, marks or bookplates in the book. Truly a superior copy.

First Edition, First Printing. Very good plus in original green cloth, titled in gilt on spine. Two colored frontispieces. Scarce thus. This work provides an excellent summary and analysis of the economy in the United States right after the end of the Civil War. Sir Samuel Morton Peto (1809-1889) was a prosperous building contractor who was in involved in the construction of many important building and railway projects in Great Britain and abroad. He also served several terms in Parliament, but had to resign after accepting a government contract. Unfortunately, his economic and business positions were devastated in a general financial panic, and he actually filed for bankruptcy in 1868. First Edition thus (1913). Quite rare. Printed by order of the trustees of the British Museum, and sold at the museum. Includes photos and commentary on the Rosetta Stone. Better than good in original paper cover, a bit damp stained on edges, but not affecting the content, which is in very good condition, with clean text and unmarred. Cover with creases and closed tears along edges. The Rosetta Stone is a stele inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Memphis, Egypt in 196 BC during the Ptolemaic dynasty on behalf of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic and Demotic scripts respectively, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. There are only minor differences between the three versions, which made the Rosetta Stone key to deciphering the Egyptian scripts. Folio. Overall, a very nice copy of this famous academic work.

Description:
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald. First Edition Thus. The highly sought after 1894 printing with illustrations by Elihu Vedder in Octavo size. A beautiful edition of the Rubaiyat, vividly illustrated by Elihu Vedder in 56 illustrations in panels that incorporate the poems of Omar Khayyam.
The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048 - 1131), a Persian poet, mathematician, and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two- line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for 'four') , meaning 'quatrains.'
From the moment of its publication, Vedder's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám achieved unparalleled success. Indeed, Vedder's presentation of the Rubaiyat is possibly the most important and influential… Read More
