[Seattle]: NP, ND. First edition. Stapled wrappers. Very Good+. Small oblong 4to. Pp. [20]. Illustrated with 16 pages of black and white photo reproductions. Original stapled gray wraps with titles and illustration in brown on the front cover. Light wear to spine. A handsome photo-tribute to a crown jewel in the Seattle Parks Department, one of the few pockets of forest that escaped logging in the late 1800s. That was probably owing to its incarnation as Ravenna Springs Park, a private wonderland that opened in 1887. One photo features two massive old-growth firs, one named "Roosevelt" (after Teddy, and sometimes referred to as the "Big Stick" in reference to his aphorism, "... and carry a big stick." The other towering fir is "Lincoln."In 1913 Rosie was unceremoniously felled. Later it was revealed Seattle Parks Department Superintendent J. W. Thompson reaped the proceeds when he sold the tree's 63 cords of firewood. Info provided here was informed by Peter Blecha's superb HistoryLink article.… Read More
