Photo (not examined out of frame) appears to be in fine condition. The frame shows numerous scratches on the face as does the back. Normally we would remove objects from frames but in this case the frame becomes part of the value with an advertising plaque on bottom edge for Quincy Quipment--Quincy Show Case Works of Quincy, Illinois. Collection this came from was, in large part, from Quincy, Illinois leading us to believe this was a display item for the Quincy Quipment Quincy Show Case Works. Photo Album USS Prometheus Tour of China, Philippines, Hawaii, Samoa, Japan, Alaska and the Panama Canal ca 1915-1916 Album measures 7.25 x 11.25 x 2 inches with string-tied posts and pebbled black flexi-boards with "Places and Faces" in gilt on front. The string-tie literally expired as I was working on the album. We will carefully pack the album but a quick repair job for the new owner will help keep the integrity of the album. Photos are glued at corners and could be removed with little damage. Most are captioned on back AND in the album. Vast majority of the 288 photos are about 3.5 x 5.5 inches with a handful larger and smaller. Includes a small collection of RPPCs. A couple photos are missing and just a couple are loose. Overall, Very Good Condition. As our good friend Kol Shaver would say, "this album is a tremendous exemplar documenting the cruises of the USS Prometheus circa 1915-1916." Photo Album and Scrapbook for "California Tour" July 18, 1948, to August 1, 1948, Including Mexico, Arizona and Canada. Photo album with typical black leaves only all leaves have been inserted into sleeves and inserted in a three-ring binder. As such, each page is well protected. Blue binder measures 10.5 x 11 inches with wear to corners. Hinges are a little loose. Most of the items are glued in although some are secured with photo corners. Pages annotated in white ink and is legible. Color prints are very washed out. Very Good Condition overall. Fun album containing 217 items including photographs (color and black and white), post cards, travel brochures, menus, matchbook covers, decals, and printed color images. also includes two clipped autographs of Eugene Ormandy and Ethel Barrymore from a performance at the Hollywood Bowl on July 20th, 1948. Photograph album of a family's travels to Colorado, the Midwest, Florida and Cuba, 1908-1940 7 ¼" x 10 ½" album; leather over flexible card covers. 40 black construction paper leaves with 147 b&w photographs adhesive mounted both sides and the last ten leaves are blank. Most photos around 4" x 3", several a bit larger. A little over half are captioned (mostly dates and locations, though there are about 15 names), predominantly on the photos themselves with a few on the page. Condition about Very Good overall with some light scattered spotting to album, pages and photos; 13 photographs loose from adhesive, some with a bit of edge wear. This album reveals a family with a young child, identified as Frank Stinson, traveling and spending time in nature. The first 29 photographs were taken in Colorado in 1908, before young Frank came into the picture. Photograph Album Showing a Woman's Trips to Germany, Niagara Falls, Virginia and Monroe, New York, with a Historical Bent, 1911-1913 5¾" x 8" flexible fabric album with 83 photographs adhesive mounted to construction paper leaves. Most photos around 3½" x 2½", 6 are larger, and nearly every page is captioned in a fine hand. Very good condition overall. Covers are lightly scuffed and worn, one leaf is loose, and around 24 images appear to be lacking, including a few excised. A few photos faded, a few scattered small stains. The last 7 leaves are blank. This album was compiled by Lillian V. Polak of New York. She and her husband Edwin were co-directors of a brokerage company, along with William Ehrenhaus, a German immigrant. This album features 9 shots on board the "Cleveland" in 1911 (mostly women on the ship) and 22 throughout Germany. Photographic and Printed Archive of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn and Dance Studio Denishawn, 1916-1964 Archive consists of: 18 photographs ranging from the smallest at 1.75 x 2.75 inches to largest of 10.75 x 13.75 inches. Six photos are 8 x 10 publicity shots, the remaining are either performances or artistic images. Five photos are signed or inscribed by St. Denis; one signed by Shawn. Several of the photos are dark and moody; one is missing bottom third. Several photos are identified on the verso; several are stamped "Collection of Charles Livermore Hurtgen". Eight ephemeral items including newspaper article, Denishawn Season Two 1916 Program, three dance programs, two letters (one ALS and one TLS) from Ted Shawn, one five-page "newsletter" signed from Ted Shawn plus carbon typed letter from BMI President Carl Haverlin, which is not signed. Apparently has been framed and re-framed with remnants of archival framer's tape on verso. Will ship with current matting. Very Good condition. Uncommon map of Port-Paix on the Northern Coast of Santo Domingo. The French website www.catalogue.bnf.fr credits the map to Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, a French geographer and cartographer. Extracted from an atlas or book with notation on map, "Tom. II.pag.273." On watermarked paper (see photo of map on light table to see watermark).

Taped on verso to mat board. Will ship as such. Very Good condition. Map of the small Caribbean island, just off the coast of Haiti. Published in Nicholas Bellin's Petit Atlas Maritime in 1764. Bellin was the official mapmaker for the King of France.

Plan of Principal Underground Workings at Cripple Creek, Colorado--Compiled from the Mine Maps of the Various Companies, United States Geological Survey Professional Paper No. 54 Plate III. Folding map measures 52.5 x 31.75 inches. Light chipping to edges; some separation at folds with clear tape to the separations. Very Good Condition. Large colorful map of the underground workings at Cripple Creek, Colorado from 1905 as compiled from various mining maps of the various companies active at Cripple Creek. Published in 1905 in United States Geological Survey Professional Paper No. 54. Plate III. Cripple Creek was the locale for the last great Colorado gold rush when gold was discovered in 1890. By 1900, the Cripple Creek mining district was home to almost 500 mines and multiple lawsuits of competing claims. A quick look at this map shows the many competing tunnels of the competing companies. By 1910, the region had produced 22.4 million ounces of gold.

Manuscript map and text on printed plat form for mining claims for the state of Colorado. Previous folds with slight separation in several areas. Light edge wear. 1 1/2-inch closed tear at bottom edge but not into neat line. "Omega" in ink on verso. Good Condition. Claim map is survey number 824, mineral district no. 2 of the Griffith Mining District, Clear Creek County, Colorado, dated December 12, 1878. Survey completed by Geo. E. Marsh complete with shaft and tunnels. Claim of Guy C. Hayes and Geo. B. Tyler. The Griffith Mining District is located near present day Georgetown, Colorado. Signed by U.S. Surveyor General for Colorado Wm. L. Campbell.

Postcards on uncoated paper; the first postcard in the stack is lightly toned to edges; the last has a light spot stain and some minor soiling to edges; else postcards clean, unmarked; tan wrapper printed with Fireweed logo and list of poem authors. Very good condition. A nice collection of poems printed on postcards, by a variety of authors, including noted Abenaki poet Joseph Bruchac, early feminist poet Lyn Lifshin, and projectivist Charles Potts. Fireweed was a short-lived poetry magazine, publishing well-known poets such as Charles Bukowski, Charles Plymell, and Anne Waldman. Scarce; not found in OCLC or commerce as of March 2024.

Collection of manuscripts, letters and clippings in very good condition with most in protective sleeves. Typical edge wear and toning. Very Good. Known as the banker-poet of Sleepy Hollow, Stephen Henry Thayer led a multi-faceted career as banker, author, poet and literary editor. In New York, he was elected to membership in the New York Stock Exchange after which he founded the banking firm of Stout & Thayer. He served on numerous boards including those of steamship companies, railroads and coal mines. Thayer's retreat, "Edgewood" on the Hudson River at Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, NY was where he found his literary muse. Here he wrote "Songs of Sleepy Hollow", "Songs from Edgewood", and "Daughters of the Revolution". He also wrote works of poetry, essays, hymns and many literary articles. Four copies of "Prescription Form For Medicinal Liquor" (Duplicate Copy) issued by U.S. Treasury Department Bureau of Prohibition Form 1403 dated 1928. Pink paper, heavily watermarked, with currency-like border design and instructions printed on verso. 4.5 x 5.5 inches. Duplicate copies with top half filled in carbon and bottom half in manuscript. Fine condition. From the Smithsonian National Museum of American History--"While the production, transport, and sale of liquor was illegal during Prohibition, the National Prohibition Act allowed alcohol for medicinal and religious use. This loophole was often exploited as a way to acquire alcohol, but it required a prescription that cost $3 from the doctor and another $3 or $4 to get it filled from a pharmacist. A doctor could prescribe up to a pint of a certain kind of liquor, or Spiritus frumenti [spirits of grain], the official medical name for whisky." Four nice scripts.

Two oversized vellum documents, each with two highly detailed engravings and seal of the United States War Office; half of War Office seal missing on McKibbin document; corners lightly creased and worn; creases from being previously folded; overall very good condition. Both documents bear stamped signatures of President Grover Cleveland and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Additionally, the commission for David B. McKibbin bears the signature of Edward D. Townsend, then Assistant Adjutant General of the United States Army. The commission for Oliver P. Gooding bears an Assistant Adjutant General signature as well, though I am unable to decipher the name.
