About This Item
Photo Album and Scrapbook for "California Tour" July 18, 1948, to August 1, 1948, Including Mexico, Arizona and Canada.
Photo album with typical black leaves only all leaves have been inserted into sleeves and inserted in a three-ring binder. As such, each page is well protected. Blue binder measures 10.5 x 11 inches with wear to corners. Hinges are a little loose. Most of the items are glued in although some are secured with photo corners. Pages annotated in white ink and is legible. Color prints are very washed out. Very Good Condition overall.
Fun album containing 217 items including photographs (color and black and white), post cards, travel brochures, menus, matchbook covers, decals, and printed color images. also includes two clipped autographs of Eugene Ormandy and Ethel Barrymore from a performance at the Hollywood Bowl on July 20th, 1948.
The trip appears to have originated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin under the direction of Jack V. Allen as tour director (his business card is on the first page). One group shot at the beginning of the trip shows 17 people all decked out in their passenger train best. The train west took them through Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and on to California with trips into Mexico and the Canadian Rockies. Several members of the party are identified but it is unclear as to who owned the album.
Included are ephemeral items from Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, San Diego, Catalina, Hollywood Bowl, Huntington Library, Rose Bowl, Griffith Park, Clifton's Cafeteria, Tijuana, Melody Lane Restaurant, San Francisco, Muir Woods, Portland, Bonneville Dam, Victoria, and the Canadian Rockies. Included at the back are 15 punched railroad tickets mostly identified in manuscript. The trip covered 9624 miles.
