Dust jacket in very good condition with some fading to spine a few chips to both top and bottom of spine. The book provides an inside look at the workings of Congress, Riegle's opposition to the Vietnam War, and his break with the Nixon White House. In 1966, Riegle, then 28 years old and a moderate Republican, defeated incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative John C. Mackie, to be elected from Michigan's 7th congressional district to the 90th Congress. He was subsequently re-elected as a Republican in the next three elections.
In 1973, Riegle changed party affiliation to become a Democrat over differences with the Nixon-Agnew Administration regarding the Vietnam War and the "Southern strategy". Inscribed on front endpaper: To Jane Eversen With best wishes, Mark HertsgaardClean text. Price unclipped ($22.50). Protected by Brodart dust jacket cover. Book and dust jacket in very good condition. Book has a water stain that is visible when viewing at the top end of book. Very top of pages for Appendix A & B showing minor staining. Stain is visible on dust jacket only from reserve side of jacket. During the Reagan years, the White House Press Corps has "functioned less as an independent than as a palace court press," according to Hertsgaard. Basing his arguments on hundreds of interviews with important administration leaders and reporters, Hertsgaard convincingly portrays the White House press as noncritical and sycophantic. As members of the same power elite that they write about, White House reporters more often than not agree with the President's policies. In addition, they have been reluctant to strongly criticize Reagan for fear of being cut off from the flow of information and of… Read More

Inscribed on second blank page: May 30, 1996 To Chris DeMuth With best wishes to someone who will be "one of the men and women" of his generation. Jay WinikClean text. Price unclipped ($30.00). Protected by Brodart dust jacket cover. Book and dust jacket in new condition. From Amazon...The book contradicts all the liberal claims about Ronald Reagan being an "amiable dunce" and other outright lies propounded by the Left. The President was completely aware of the political machinations going on around him, and yet was able to stay above the fray and let his select operatives fight it out with their American opponents to achieve victory. From Publishers Weekly...The thesis that President Ronald Reagan's administration, through its embrace of military confrontation and brinksmanship, hastened the breakup of the Soviet Union and decisively won the Cold War for the U.S. receives a fresh twist in Winik's intensely dramatic, personal narrative history. He credits four members of the Reagan team, all… Read More

Dust jacket in fine condition with two small chips on right front top and one at bottom of spine. Clean text. Price unclipped ($15.95). Protected by Brodart dust jacket cover. Evelyn Davis was a corporate gadfly. Often causing chaos at shareholder annual meetings. She berated Lee Iacocca by saying he needed to lose weight. After Carter's 1976 election as president, Powell was described as a member of the "Georgia Mafia", a group of close aides from Georgia who moved to high positions in the Carter administration, but who were inexperienced in national politics. Powell and Carter's chief of staff Hamilton Jordan appeared in 1977 as caricatures on the cover of Time in 1977 and were pictured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, where they were dubbed Carter's "whiz kids". Powell served as White House press secretary for Carter's entire term as president.
