Senator Metcalf was an influential member of Senate especially in the area of conservation, where he was considered a pioneer. In many ways Senator Metcalf was overshadowed by long-time Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, the senior Senator from Montana. Mansfield succeeded LBJ as leader and served until 1977. Mansfield once called Metcalf, "Montana's most effective Senator."
