Printed in an edition of 500 copies. Uncommon work from the outspoken fundamentalist and prolific defender of same. Brigham Young (1801-1877), second President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and first Governor of Utah, was the founder and chief builder of the Intermountain West and the Great Basin. He is recognized as one of the foremost colonizers and empire builders of all time.

This 'Official Declaration' (generally called the Manifesto of the Apostles), was drafted by Charles W. Penrose and signed at the foot by the First Presidency and Twelve on December 12. This short work begins by denying that the Church preached blood atonement, and that Church did not interfere with the rights of citizens or in the free exercise of social or political rights. It goes on to note that the endowment ceremony or in any doctrine of the Church was not against the federal government and that they had no intention of overthrowing the United States. Reverse is illustrated with fourteen views, two in color, and a Western United States map that shows major highways and state boundaries [20 cm x 18 cm] / [8" x 7"].

Excellent pictorial souvenir filled with turn of the century images of Salt Lake City with portraits of local officials and leaders of the LDS Church. Short two-page introduction is followed by 38 pages of captioned shots, a handful of pages dedicated to explanatory text. A page of Salt Lake City facts at the end. Images of Liberty Park, Wandamere, Saltair, Lagoon, Federal Heights, Commercial Club, All Hollows College, University of Utah, Utah State, the Salt Palace and others. Nice double-page panorama of Salt Lake at the center.

Nicely printed program for the 1916 Pioneer Day festivities in Ogden. The program of events is followed by a list of all the living pioneers who made the overland trek between 1847 and 1869, who were then residing in Weber County. All pages have charming silhouette illustrations by M. Charles Woods. Advertisements for Union Pacific and the Goodale-Scoville Company. David O. McKay is listed as the director of the street pageant. "This souvenir, got out in haste, is despite that a piece of art, and we have been told so by those who ken a thing or two. It illustrates the fact that the A.L. Scoville Press of Ogden can conceive beautiful ideas when left to its own notions." - laid in card.

Bright view of two women (one seated/one standing) in front of a pueblo (Shongopovi?) with a pile of corn in the foreground. William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was one of the most prolific (and maybe the most famous) of Western photographers. During his lengthy career, Jackson photographed numerous views of the West between Nebraska and California, from cliff dwellings to industrial urban centers. Launched as a photographic publishing firm in the late 1890s, The Detroit Photographic Company, later the Detroit Publishing Company, obtained exclusive right for use of the Swiss "Photochrom" process. Jack Ellis Haynes (1884-1962) began working in the family photographic business at a relatively young age and toward the end of 1916 he formally bought out his father's interest in the Yellowstone photography business and was awarded sole right to produce pictorial souvenirs. An accomplished photographer in his own right, Jack operated the park concessions and Saint Paul studios under the name 'J.E. Haynes' and then 'Haynes Inc.' (1937-1945). In 1945 Jack and Isabel moved the base of operations to Bozeman, and established Haynes Studios Inc.

A whimsical illustration of the sun personified and wearing a crown with its legs splayed across the Midwest, instead of a scepter he's clutching a glowing thermometer, that is labeled 'July Temperatures.' Howard Fisher (1890-1962) began working for the Portland newspaper, 'The Oregon Journal' in 1919, a decade later he was named the editorial cartoonist, a position he held until his retirement in 1956.

Salt Lake City: The Hotel Utah, 1910. Postcard [9 cm x 14 cm] with a divided back. Unused and in nice condition. Six seperate views of Salt Lake's Emigration Canyon illustrate this card, including one that shows the tracks of the legendary Emigration Canyon Railroad. This card was produced by the Hotel Utah with their logo on the reverse.

Both volumes near fine in like jackets. A nicer than usually seen set of this important first hand account of the Mormon migration from the midwest to the Great Basin and the first decade plus in the west. Hosea Stout (1810-1899) was one of the most prolific, and insightful of the early Mormon diarists. At various times he was an officer in the militia in Illinois, and Winter Quarters on the Missouri River, attorney general of the State of Deseret and the Territory of Utah, United States district attorney for Utah, and president of the house of the Utah Territorial Legislature. These associations with the highest ecclesiastical and civil authorities permitted Stout to inscribe in his diary conversations and transactions which were outside the knowledge of many diarists. Novel that takes place in Yellowstone by the noted writer, who also illustrated this work. "Always in the Yellowstone we marvelled at the variety of country spread before us. Our camps were never the same two nights in a row, save when we made our last stop near Shoshone Geyser basin. We stayed there three days. Camping off the trail in Yellowstone has one major drawback. It spoils you forever for camping in any other country." - p.91.

Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements. "This book consists of a collection of pieces, most written on commission from some magazine editor, book publisher, or college speakers bureau. Whether or not each piece rises to the occasion I leave for the reader to judge. All were written for money, in the higher, finer sense of that ambiguous term - I have a wife, an ex-wife, several children, a dog, a cat, a mortgaged house, and a 1973 Ford pickup truck to support - and all were written for fun.
