(ids) John Millar, 1735-1801.Millar was a Scottish lawyer and philosopher who counted among hisfriends and acquaintances, Hume, Lord Kames, Adam Smith and Thomas Reid. Both the American and French revolutions had his support, and he waswhiggish when it was rather more circumspect to be toryish. He washeavily influenced by Smith's Theory of Economic Determinism, while thepresent title also show Montesquieu's affect on his thinking. Thisedition comes between the third published in London in 1779 and thefourth published in Edinburgh in 1806. It was probably unauthorized andwas no doubt issued in response to the events in France.
