Description:
New York: Sidney Z. Lucas. New edition. Very Good. Image measures approx. 16.5 inches by 21.25 inches; framed; slight crease in the margin through the title. Perhaps the most vivid illustrations created of 1860 Chicago were published by Jevne and Amini in France. Raoul Varin of Paris, France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. He engraved a variety of signed, limited edition numbered prints ... in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A Ackermann & Son ... His views took a historical perspective ... often based on extant classical works - Chicagology.com". Only 100 signed prints of the finished work were published. This is an aquatint reprint for Sidney Z. Lucas, who operated the Old Print Center in NYC: this reprint was likely done between 1930-1960.

Chicago: A. Ackermann & Son Inc, 1927. First, Limited edition. Very Good. Image measures approx. 15.5 inches by 21.25 inches; unframed but mounted on fiberboard, dark "tidal stain" at lower left margin (maskable with matting). Perhaps the most vivid illustrations created of 1860 Chicago were published by Jevne and Almini in France. Raoul Varin of Paris, France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. "The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. He engraved a variety of signed, limited edition numbered prints ... in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A Ackermann & Son ... His views took a historical perspective ... often based on extant classical works." Only 100 signed prints of the finished work were published. This is apparently a Proof State of the print, and thus unnumbered, but it is signed by Varin in pencil in the lower right corner. .

Description:
New York: D. Appleton, 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. poor. Duodecimo, 334 pages, publisher's black cloth, lacks spine, top cover detached. NOTE: this is ONLY volume 1 (of 2). Produced as documentation of his mission work and inspiration for others, this book contains an original map of the areas visited and diary-like entries. However, the ultimate purpose was to aid other missionaries in learning about and recognizing customs and people, so the writing sometimes reads like reporting. The first volume of the series covers the author's journey through Turkey and Persia. The introduction provides some selected translations of the Koran and explanations of Islam. With an excellent, large, foldout Map of Turkey, Persia, the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia - from Crete to the Persian Gulf. Rev. Southgate was made the bishop of the Ottoman Empire in 1844.

Fairfield, WA: Ye Galleon Press, ( 1996). 1st Combined. Hardcover. Fine/issued without. 12mo, 44, 96, 45pp., reddish-brown imitation leather. Three bogus accounts of travels in America: an Indian captivity, a 1787 overland account, and a ship's voyage. Introduction by Jim Dowd, who has signed this copy on p.10. These appear to be variants of the same tale, and the pseudonymous DeCalves may be Van Delure who may be Van Leason. All the earlier texts of these suspenseful trips are scarce, with no known library having copies of all three texts. [ See Howes USIANA]. If true, this 1780 cross-country journey would have preceded Lewis & Clark by nearly twenty years!
