[n.p, England, likely London or Kent], 1827. Very good with some soiling to vellum and minor finger smudges to some of the pages. A fascinating and unique volume.. Lovely manuscript volume of amateur poetry in a single, neat, readable hand, bound in full vellum. The poems are dated between 1827-33, making Child a teenager of fourteen when the first poem was written (though the paper is watermarked 1829, so some, if not all, of the poems must have been transcribed after initially written). A young man of immense privilege, Child was later a wealthy coal merchant, the peerage noting he held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace and purchased and lived at Bromley Palace (where his son was 1st Baronet, and his great grandson was 3rd Baronet, the late actor Jeremy Child). Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1832. A charming 1832 manuscript inventory of 74 law books, prepared just over a year before the owner, Capt. Dr. Arthur Dingwall Fordyce's, death. The manuscript lists the law books, number of volumes, printing location, and date of publication, as well as directions to his son, Alexander Fordyce, to give the books as gifts to his grandsons, Arthur Dingwall Fordyce and Arthur Farquhar. In 1834, Farquhar signed signifying receipt of his allocation of books. An interesting insight into the prominent Dingwall Fordyce family of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

A good plus copy, uncut, in the publisher's original orange marbled boards with a printed paper spine label, the spine worn and chipped with loss and hinges weak. Relatively scarce in the 21st century, though an apparently popular work at the time, which saw a second edition in the same year and a third edition in 1825.. First edition of a scarce historical romance about Mary, Queen of Scots, published to coincide with the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822, the first by a reigning monarch since that of Charles II in 1651. A work clearly brimming with Scottish nationalist sentiment, the preface by the "authors" states the novel was "sketched some years ago" but was written "when a rumour arose, that an unknown author of great power [Sir Walter Scott, in publishing The Abbott in 1820] was about to bring back to our ken the days and fortunes of Queen Mary." III gently sunned, printer's tickets of Benjamin Smith of Liverpool to front pastedowns, text and illustrations clean. An attractive example.. Triple decker first edition in book form in publisher's blind stamped, ribbed brown cloth with a central gilt device of a clock, spine elaborately stamped and titled in gilt. Includes The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge before they were separately issued. Profusely illustrated with frontispieces plus 194 wood-engraved illustrations, 154 by "Phiz" (Hablot Browne) and 39 by George Cattermole (though Smith notes some dispute about such numbers). Engraved frontispiece in each volume with tissue guard. Good in contemporary quarter leather over marbled boards, heavy wear to boards especially at edges, some dog-eared pages, frontispiece torn with sewn repair, ink inscription to ffep, and substantial damp staining.. Revised Edition. Number 41 of the Sunday School and Youth's Library. An apparently uplifting, but rather disturbing, work about two pious siblings who died young and within a year of each other. One of many warnings in the book, "when the young die strangers to religion, the horrible thought often wrings the heart of surviving parents, that they have gone from the agonies of disease to the torments of hell." 24mo. Very good in contemporary diced calf, gilt ruled, rebacked with original backstrip laid down but ends chipped with loss, corners rubbed, the text generally clean but with foxed plates, and with prior owner signature to half titles.. Memoirs of a crusader printed at the first private press in Wales, which was operated by Johnes from 1803-10. Plomer, Some Private Presses of the Nineteenth Century (The Library, pgs. 407-08, 1900). This unique copy is ex-library of the Gunnery with usual treatments and in library binding along with what appears to be minor burn damage.. First edition and interesting association copy. Volume I inscribed by Abbott Lawrence to William Cabell Rives. Lawrence was noted as an ambassador to Britain while Rives was a senator and ambassador to France. Notably, this important friendship was the subject to an 1846 book itself entitled Letters from the Hon. Abbott Lawrence to the Hon. William C. Very good in later full black calf with red label in gilt, tooled decoration and five bands, ownership inscription dated 1906 to endpaper, trimming affecting text to frontispiece, with a few early manuscript notes in the margins and manuscript copy of Cobden's poem to Lady Spelman on the rear blanks.. The posthumously published memoirs of aristocrat and courtier Robert Carey, who served during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. Following the death of Elizabeth I, he road for three days to carry the news of her death to James. He became Earl of Monmouth in 1626. II part II torn and repaired, prior owner bookplates including Berland's.. First edition, the Abel Berland copy (Christies, 10/9/2001). The second most celebrated English diarist, Evelyn's Diary remained unpublished until 1818, when editor William Bray obtained permission from Evelyn's family to publish a small portion thereof in the instant two volumes. The diary covers a tumultuous period of regicide, revolution, fire, and plague in London and England. 4to. 2vols. Good in contemporary quarter brown sheepskin over worn marbled paper boards, prior owner name on flyleaf, text block is stabbed with two thongs the ends finishing on top of the boards prior to covering, some foxing, staining, missing rear endpaper.. First Edition. Contains the purported memoirs of Miss Perkins (as well as anonymous prefatory matter and commentary), of whom there appears to be little information available apart from this book. The contents contain letters, poems, addresses, and quotes attributed to Miss Perkins, and reads more akin to hagiography than standard braggadocious memoir fare. It also appears that many of the passages were borrowed, verbatim, from other publications, such as the New England Tract Society (see e.g., pg. 85 "being who is transcendently glorious"). 12mo. [Hafod, Ceredigion, Wales]: At the Hafod Press, by James Henderson, 1807. The last book in the Froissart Chronicles, the so-called volume 5, and containing the index for the prior books, however, Memoirs was issued five years after the earlier volumes and was the last book to be issued by this early Welsh private press. Contains a hand-colored frontispiece, and as with other Hafod titles, an engraved vignette title of Johnes's estate. 4to. [5], 221pp., [3]. Very good in contemporary dice calf, all edges marbled, bookplate of Lord Northwick, some rubbing to joints and boards, minor age toning.

London: John Murray, 1841. Heavy spotting to prelims and occasionally later in text, some spine lean.. Second edition, enlarged with the addition of a chapter on deer-stalking, and burn and river fishing, almost doubling the length of the book. Considered one of the best mid-19th century books on fishing and shooting in Scotland. In publisher's brown gilt-stamped cloth, bound by Remnant & Edmonds with their label to the rear pastedown. 8vo. xii, 204pp. + Murray catalogue. Westwood & Satchell, pg. 63.

1715. Very good, bound in 19th century half leather with loss to the spine.. Signed by Leslie at the conclusion. Leslie was the leading Jacobite propagandist after the 1688 Glorious Revolution and is best remembered today for his role in publicizing the 1692 Massacre of Glencoe 16pp. ESTC T113238.

First edition. Early work by Van Vechten with even scarcer dust jacket. A 1919 review in the journal Hispania somewhat bittersweetly quipped that "the book is not complete, nor free from mistakes, nor are most of the data or the impressions in it gathered at first hand; but it is the first attempt in English at a general survey of the field."
