1669 John Sleidan Four Empires GREECE Rome Babylon Persia Key of History Horn
Johannes Sleidanus was a 16th-century historian who is best remembered for his commentary and analysis of the Protestant Reformation. He collected as all papers and manuscripts concerning the Reformation to which he had access (particularly those of Martin Luther) and edited them as part of his 'Commentary on State, Religion, and Republic'. And while his contributions to the growth of popularity of the Reformation was his greatest work, he also published a book on the history of the world.
'The Four Empires', also known as 'The Key of History', is a methodical history of four the most important kingdoms of the world – Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. He describes important world events, beginning with Flood of Noah, through Roman emperors, the reign of Alexander the Great, and much more. This 1669 edition includes notes and commentary by Georg Horn.

1739 MUSIC 1ed Cantus Firmus Theory Gregorian Chant Italian Palermo Canto Fermo

An exceedingly rare and desirably 18th-century Italian history of the cantus firmus. In music composition, particularly in medieval Gregorian Chant, the cantus firmus is the melody used for any given piece of music. In the 18th-century, Italian composer and music historian Filippo lo Piccolo wrote a music theory book on how to use and harmonize the cantus firmus. This book, "Il canto fermo esposto" was published in Palermo by Angelo Felicella and is utterly filled with music examples throughout!

Interestingly, this work is not found at all in the OCLC – a very rare 18th-century music theory text!

Description:
1562 Italian Renaissance Courtier Book Baldassare Castiglione Courtesan Venice

"Outward beauty is a true sign of inner goodness. Just as with trees the beauty of the blossom testifies the goodness of the fruit." – Baldassare Castiglione, The Book of the Courtier

A rare printing of Baldassare Castiglione's 'Book of the Courtier.' This work was an important portrayal of a European Renaissance court life and discussed elements of philosophy and customs closely associated with courtier life. Baldassare created a series of fictional conversations that resemble those encountered in a royal court. These conversations discuss humanities, fine arts, drama, classical art, mythology, women, humor, and love. This book was known to have a significant influence on upper class society in the centuries following its release.

1595 HOLY LAND MAPS 1ed Zuallart Jerusalem Voyage Crete Cyprus Bible ART Israel

Jean Zuallart was a 16th-century Belgian politician who, in 1586, took a voyage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. The travelogue and memoirs of the pilgrimage proved to be one of the most popular and oft-translated works on the Holy Land of this era. First published in 1587, this work provides some of the earliest descriptions of Crete and Cyprus, as well as Jaffa and Venice, and other places in-route to Jerusalem. Zuallart taught himself to draw so that he could illustrate his own book – illustrations which appear in this 1595 first Italian edition.

Description:
1667 1ed History of Popes Nephews Papal Nepotism ROME Vatican Gregorio Leti 2v

In 1667, Italian historian Gregorio Leti published an important book on the history of Papal nepotism – 'History of the Popes Nephews'. A Papal-nephew, or cardinal-nephew, is a Catholic official whose office is elevated because of they are related to the pope. This practice was at its height during the 17th-century when Leti sought to expose many of the Renaissance popes and the history of the papacy.

This impressive 1667 first edition was published by Elzevier and printed in Amsterdam. Willems says of this edition: "a well printed edition from Elzevier".
