Hill, a former British official, presents a firsthand account of the people, places, and events that shaped India's colonial history. Hill held positions such as Collector of Ahmedabad, Resident of Hyderabad and Udaipur, Under Secretary to the Government of India, Member of Council in Bombay, and Member of the Viceroy's Council. Throughout his service, he developed close and friendly relations with many Indians from different races, castes, and creeds, which informed his understanding of India's diverse cultures and history. The author draws on his personal experiences to describe events in Punjab, Rajputana, Hyderabad, and Central India from 1885 to 1925. Among the topics covered in this book include the impact of WWI on British rule, the Punjab Rebellion of 1919, the Montagu-Chelmsford reforms. Our copy includes a October 29, 1936 letter from the author to "Dear Foster" (presumably Sir William Foster, mentioned in the book's preface). Book is from the private collection of historian Frederick A. Hagar and was acquired while he attended Cambridge. Book shows some red underlining; notes on the back endpaper; and a separate page of notes (whether these were made by Foster, Hagar, or someone else is unclear).
