Description:
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] HANNIBAL, MO. LICENSE TAG AND RECEIPT. Hannibal, Missouri, 1941. Window-mounted license tag, unused, with peel-off backing still intact (printed with mounting instructions), with the original receipt made out to a Hannibal resident. This was a city tag, that was required by the Hanniballian authorities in addition to the state tag. Mark Twain's portrait appears at the center of the tag itself which was intended to be stuck on the windshield. The ultimate example of Mark Twain ephemera, and a classic indication of the depth of the Twain identity in his home town.

Description:
[LOWELL, JAMES RUSSELL] Harvard University. HARVARD UNIVERSITY. VALEDICTORY EXERCISES OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1838. [Cambridge: Metcalf, 1838] Broadside. First edition. A few small creases and nicks along the top edge, but a fine copy. This is the commencement program for Lowell's graduating class, listing his poem as fourth of the five items on the program, but with an interesting footnote printed at the foot of the program: "On account of the absence of the Poet the Poem will be omitted." Lowell had broken some rule in chapel (not wearing a necktie was a serious infraction, for example, although Lowell's transgression is…

Stein, Gertrude. HAVE THEY ATTACKED MARY. HE GIGGLED. West Chester, Pa.: Horace F. Temple [1917] First edition, one of 200 numbered copies. Original red printed wrappers, uncut. Light wear two small chips, and slight offsetting of wrapper dye to first and last leaves of text, but a well-preserved copy of this scarce and fragile pamphlet. The "poem," a sort of free verse conversation, was a caricature of the art critic, Henry McBride, although Stein called it a "genre picture" and claimed the caricature was more generalized. The frontispiece cartoon of Henry McBride speaks for itself. Wilson…

Description:
Lowell, James Russell. HEARTSEASE AND RUE. New York & Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1888. First edition, first printing, second state (page 63/4 cancelled, as usual). Original white quarter cloth, and boards, gilt. The first printing was 3,060 copies, and the cancel was made on February 28, before publication; from BAL's notes it would seem that only the 1,030 copies sent to London for the English issue escaped being canceled. Some dust, but a very good copy, inscribed by Lowell to his life-long friend: Charles W. Story in pencil on the front end paper: "To C. W. Story with the author's love. 7th March, 1888." Lowell's…

[Melville, Herman] Smith, J. E. A. HISTORY OF PITTSFIELD. Springfield: C. W. Bryan & Co., 1876. First edition. Original black cloth, gilt. Very fine fresh tight copy, and quite scarce in such bright tight fresh condition. In fact, BAL had not seen a copy in original binding, and could only speculate that it was indeed cloth-bound. Melville is credited with supplying or editing the article about his uncle, Major Thomas Melville, and there is one direct quote by Melville. Not in the Carroll Wilson collection. Sabin 83327. BAL 13675.

[Melrose Heights, Mass.: Shepard Manufacturing Co., 1906] Sterling silver spoon with raised relief in bowl with a portrait of Mark Twain, and his facsimile signature above his head. The front of the handle shows his boyhood home, the old mill, the "Huckleberry Finn Home," the cave entrance, and the word "Hannibal." The back of the handle shows the bridge, the library, the high school, and the lime kiln. The hallmark on this spoon is an "S" within a circle and the word "Sterling" but no other marks. The earliest pattern we have seen on a souvenir spoon…

Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] HOW TO TELL A STORY AND OTHER ESSAYS. New York: Harper, 1897. First edition. Original red decorated cloth, gilt, top edge gilt, uncut. A bright crisp copy, near fine. An uncommon title due to the unusually low press run of just 2,000 copies. All copies of the first edition have the misprint ("ciper" for "cipher") in the text; this was not corrected until the book was reprinted. Also, copies of this book without "1897" on the title-page are later editions (not merely "second states" of the first edition) but are often misrepresented as first editions. This volume was the first of only two…

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Edison, Thomas. HUCKLEBERRY FINN, PREMIER QUARTET. [n.p., Edison Laboratories, 1917] Cylinder record (Edison Blue Amberol Record). In original sleeve, with lid. Some crumbling of the inner clay liner, but the cylinder is fine and playable. This recording by the Premier Quartet is based on the sheet music and lyrics by Sam Lewis, Joe Young, and Cliff Hess, published the same year in connection with an early film version of HUCKLEBERRY FINN. One of the Premier Quartet singers, Bill Murray, was as popular in his day as Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby a few decades later. Edison produced wax cylinders in…

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Lewis, Sam, and Joe Young and Cliff Hess. HUCKLEBERRY FINN. New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co. [1917] First edition. Sheet music. Original pictorial color wrappers. Fine copy, never bound. This issue has an ad for Jack Wells' `Buzzin the Bee' (1916) on rear cover; we have also noted copies with ads for two different Irving Berlin songs. The cover illustration by `Barbelle' echoes the original Kemble drawings of Huck, but makes him look ignorant, a quality that Twain objected to in Kemble's earliest drawings. The genesis of this sheet music is obscure; it does not seem to be…
