[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] HANNIBAL, MO. LICENSE TAG AND RECEIPT. Hannibal, Missouri, 1941. Window-mounted license tag, unused, with peel-off backing still intact (printed with mounting instructions), with the original receipt made out to a Hannibal resident. This was a city tag, that was required by the Hanniballian authorities in addition to the state tag. Mark Twain's portrait appears at the center of the tag itself which was intended to be stuck on the windshield. The ultimate example of Mark Twain ephemera, and a classic indication of the depth of the Twain identity in his home town.

Light wear two small chips, and slight offsetting of wrapper dye to first and last leaves of text, but a well-preserved copy of this scarce and fragile pamphlet. The "poem," a sort of free verse conversation, was a caricature of the art critic, Henry McBride, although Stein called it a "genre picture" and claimed the caricature was more generalized. [Melrose Heights, Mass.: Shepard Manufacturing Co., 1906] Sterling silver spoon with raised relief in bowl with a portrait of Mark Twain, and his facsimile signature above his head. The front of the handle shows his boyhood home, the old mill, the "Huckleberry Finn Home," the cave entrance, and the word "Hannibal." The back of the handle shows the bridge, the library, the high school, and the lime kiln. The hallmark on this spoon is an "S" within a circle and the word "Sterling" but no other marks. Some crumbling of the inner clay liner, but the cylinder is fine and playable. This recording by the Premier Quartet is based on the sheet music and lyrics by Sam Lewis, Joe Young, and Cliff Hess, published the same year in connection with an early film version of HUCKLEBERRY FINN.
