About This Item
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Lewis, Sam, and Joe Young and Cliff Hess. HUCKLEBERRY FINN. New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co. [1917] First edition. Sheet music. Original pictorial color wrappers. Fine copy, never bound. This issue has an ad for Jack Wells' `Buzzin the Bee' (1916) on rear cover; we have also noted copies with ads for two different Irving Berlin songs. The cover illustration by `Barbelle' echoes the original Kemble drawings of Huck, but makes him look ignorant, a quality that Twain objected to in Kemble's earliest drawings. The genesis of this sheet music is obscure; it does not seem to be connected with any film version of HUCK FINN. In fact, the first film version of HUCK FINN was not until 1919 (preceded by 1909 films of PRINCE AND THE PAUPER and DEATH DISK, 1912 and 1917 films of TOM SAWYERs, and a 1916 PUDD'NHEAD WILSON). Not in BAL, Tenney, etc.
