Description:
[Washington, D.C.]: [G.P.O.], 1900. First edition. Tall octavo. 5[6] pp. Folded twice with the title printed on one of the facing panels. Old light stain in blank margin of last page. Very good. This is the finishing nail on the eight hour work day for employees of the Federal Government. A law to much the same effect was passed in 1876 but that was viewed as a recommendation and numerous conflicts arose. This bill sought to make the eight-hour day an undisputed law. It is interesting that all of Section 1 in this printing has been redacted (though only with a thin line so legibility remains). Small stamp on front reading "Portland, ME., Socialist Branch."

Description:
New York: Hammer Publications, 1981. First edition. One of 300 numbered copies. Folio (19 x 23 inches). Introduction sheet by Carl Sagan and 10 serigraphs of cave art with each print having a leaf of explanatory text. Housed in the original brown box with cover lettering. Pinholes to corners professionally and invisibly repaired. A very good copy. Oddly, only 2 copies recorded by OCLC. The finest and most beautiful reproductions of European cave paintings ever published. Every major continent has cave paintings by prehistoric man and they have long fascinated the modern world. There has been a plethora of books and theories about these cave painting starting from the work of Abbé Henri Breuil and extending to today. Perhaps one of the most finely executed works on the subject is the title offered here. This suite of prints was created in conjunction with an exhibition at Hammer Galleries in NYC in the fall of 1982. Mazonowicz, who lived in Spain, spent time visiting Altamira and Valltorta and… Read More

Description:
[Santa Monica]: [Magpie Press], 1967. First edition of this miniature book (2 1/8 x 3 inches). French-fold printing (on leaf folded to make 8 pp. but with printing only on 5 of them. Printer's sewn wrappers. Very good. The Magpie Press was operated by argaret Taylor & Roberta Nixon. Basically a panegyric to printing on the hand press it was surely issued as a keepsake from the Second International Book Fair held in Los Angeles. This was the very beginning of what we know know as the ABAA California International Antiquarian Book Fair which alternates between Los Angeles and San Francisco and is one of the largest books fairs in the world. Almost surely Glen and Muir Dawson had a hand in this as Roberta worked for Dawson's Book Shop for decades [and where I was fortunate enough to call her my friend and co-worker]. Glen Dawson was one of the founders of the ABAA.

Description:
San Francisco: California Academy of Sciences, 1905. First edition. Tall octavo. 86 pp. of text plus 57 full page plates. Publisher's printed buff wrappers. Covers reattached. Minor edge chipping to wrappers and upper corner bumped. A very good copy. The last book printed by the venerable printing firm of Edward Bosqui before his factory went up in flames in the great fire of 1906 and judging from its scarcity the majority of the copies of this title went up in smoke as well. In 1890 Eastwood took a vacation to southern California, where she studied the plants of the region. The following year she worked for several months as an assistant in the herbarium at the California Academy of Sciences. She was offered a position as joint Curator with Katherine Brandegee in 1892, and left both Colorado and teaching behind for California and botany (MacFarland x). In 1894, with the retirement of Mrs. Brandegee, Eastwood was advanced to Curator and Head of the Department of Botany, a position she kept until… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., ca. 1910]. Handmade photograph album trimmed with ribbon, 6.75 x 11 inches containing 28 silver print photographs, all 2.5x2.5 inches, nicely composed and most with lengthy captions. One loose photo. Photos are very good; the album has some of the ribbon trim missing and a center horizontal fold. The album was assembled around 1910 by a British woman associated with a medical mission in northern India, likely Lucknow, and possibly the Church Missionary Society. A caption notes the dress of the local girls being “different from the girls in Lucknow.” The captions mention a Miss Greenwood the medical assistant, a Dr. Webb of the medical office (female), and a Mrs. Mylrea. Amy Lawrence Chapman Mylrea and her husband Reverend C. Garland Mylrea were associated with the Church Missionary Society and joined the Bengal Mission around 1895 and were also in Lucknow around 1910. Mrs. Mylrea was a medical assistant. The group was apparently on a holiday traveling in and around Shimla in… Read More
