Description:
1. Scarce first edition. Dustjacket in poor condition, missing parts of spine, with considerable archival tape repairs, and general wear overall. Blue cloth with gilt letters to spine and front cover. xviii, 496pp. 9.5 x 6.25 inches. Spine gilt somewhat dull, cover gilt bright. Scattered white spotting on spine and rear cover; as if water was sprinkled on it while it was face down. NO loosening to cloth or other signs of moisture damage. Cloth intact but for very small (under 1/8"") vertical tears at spine ends. Binding and hinges sound; pages clean and tight. Contains preface, 19 plates on 17 pages, tipped-in errata slip, bibliography and index. Also opinions and accounts of many battles, generals, Texas independance, the Mexican War, slavery, his family, the campaign of Stephen Kearny, etc. He fought with the French in Africa, the U S in Mexico, the Indians in the Northwest, and the South in the Civil War.

1. Very nice, solid set. Rare first edition published by Scribner Armstrong. 1874 on title and copyright pages. 9.25 x 6.24 inches. (Vol 1) 416 pp, (Vol 2) 417-834pp + 4pp ads. Spines are faded, and have gilt lettering and very slight chipping and fraying to ends. Pages are clean bright and tight. Small signature in pencil at top of fep, ""J.W. Simonton Dec. 1874"" (Pa. Judge); same small name in pencil at top edge of title page. Hinges and joints fine. Scarce work by an important Presbyterian historian and prominent Protestant theologian. Ezra Hall Gillett was a Connecticut born Yale graduate and pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Harlem, New York during the Civil War. He taught political economy, history and ethics at the University of New York.
