1. Very nice, solid set. Rare first edition published by Scribner Armstrong. 1874 on title and copyright pages. 9.25 x 6.24 inches. (Vol 1) 416 pp, (Vol 2) 417-834pp + 4pp ads. Spines are faded, and have gilt lettering and very slight chipping and fraying to ends. Pages are clean bright and tight. Small signature in pencil at top of fep, ""J.W. Simonton Dec. 1874"" (Pa. Judge); same small name in pencil at top edge of title page. Hinges and joints fine. Scarce work by an important Presbyterian historian and prominent Protestant theologian. Ezra Hall Gillett was a Connecticut born Yale graduate and pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Harlem, New York during the Civil War. He taught political economy, history and ethics at the University of New York.
