Bowles was an eminent pioneering gardener and Royal Horticultural Society member for over 50 years. A very good copy of this fascinating man.

Very nice copy.

A virtually pristine copy in similar jacket (will add protective sleeve when ordered). Includes coverage of Hipparchus, Ptolemy and Arabian Astronomy among much else. The author (1912-1991) was Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Sydney, as well as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, but had been also publishing on the history of science, especially astronomy, from the late 1960s.

The faults are all quite minor and VG- seems a fair rating. Some Froebel influence. Green boards with light brown black-printed spine, minimum corner bumping, spine a little dark with hints of end-rubbing. x + 384; uncut fore-edge, main problem is extensive but easily erasable light pencil annotations, usually single or double word translations of word in Middle English text, 1918-dated pencil sig. to fr. end-paper. . Has preserved M.E. spelling etc. up to 1400, 15th cent. slightly normalised, later fully modernised. A very scholarly work with extensive discussions from p.157 of the nature of Mediaeval lyrics (by Chambers), text sources and notes plus a bibliography and 1st line index. Eleven chapters on various topics including ancient jJapanese pigments (with coloured plates +tissue guards), Khmer architecture, Chinese lacquer and Persian lustred pottery (fill details on request), also a short opening obituary in Frenc of Gaston Migeon. Apparently very scarce. 23.5 cm x 30.5 cm.

Good (-)/No Jacket. 13 Cm X 19 Cm. 292+(4, pub.list); front endpaper lightly tanned with traces of erasedpencil, gutter paper split, early signature verso front endpaper, t.p.heavily tanned, following 'Contents' page also tanned but less heavily, heavy tanning to last page of pub.list and lightly to rear endpaper, some gutters between gatherings slightly open, covers have whitish splash-type soiling to front, corners bumped, spine faded with nick to bottom, back clean and brighter but still a few marks. Undated but feels early 20th cent., unclear if the stories which comprise this work are actually fiction or fictionalised memoir - full of dialogue but also lots of detail about different islands with some anthropological content. Fairly uncommon.
