New York 1966, Dutton, US First edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, VG/VG , illus, end paper maps, order of battle of RAF & Luftwaffe, list of eyewitnesses., bibliog. ---------------------------------August 13, 1940 - Eagle Day - was the day chosen by Hermann Göring, Air Marshal of Hitler's Luftwaffe, to launch a crushing air attack which would annihilate the Royal Air Force and prepare the way for Nazi Germany's invasion of Britain. With this abortive attack, the Battle of Britain began, a battle in which a few hundred men and airplanes ( many of which were obsolete) struggled against staggering odds, against fear, fatigue and desperation, to turn the tide against Germany. It was this battle which moved Churchill to say, "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few." ----------------------------------------To compile this definitive study of the Battle of Britain, Richard Collier employed a staff of thirteen, traveling 30 ... Elliot, Robert

  • Quantity available: 1
Letchworth 1961, Air Review Ltd, UK First edition, hard bound in dust jacket, Fine/Fine condition, ( small previous owners name stamp on front paste down ) 6x9, 256 pages, illustrated. --------------------------------------- Seldom before in the history of aviation literature has there been published such a novel as The Eagle's Height. Written by an experienced and prize-winning serving officer in the United States Air Force, this book has been fully "vetted" by the "HARLEYFORD" Team of technical writers. Whilst the story itself is fiction, it is "factual" in the sense that every incident is truly depicted and occurs at the right time and in the right place; the aircraft are flying in the right places and they also are correctly described! The Eagle's Height centres around one Paul Hammond, who joins the Royal Flying Corps, and his air-fighting experiences during the 1914-1918 War. Now is your chance to learn how the pilots of the Roya ... Read more

The defeat of that attempt by the Company's officers involved the ruin of the governor-general, Sir John Shore, whose "failure" in dealing with the officers has been held against him by generations of historians. -------------------------------------------------------------------------Tracing the events from three points of view—those of the British government, the Company's government in Calcutta, and the officers of the Company's service—Raymond Callahan shows that the aspects of the Company's service which struck observers in London as inefficient and corrupt were, in the officers ... 1998, London,John Murray, first UK edition, Fine/Fine condition, hard bound w/dj, 6x9, cover art by Paul Wright. 247 pages. AUTOGRAPHED EDITION - SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON A CUSTOM BOOK PLATE ........................................................... # 14 in this series. ( the Last Book)., It is 1843 and Captain Sir Nathaniel Drinkwater embarks on the paddle-steamer Vestal for an inspection of lighthouses on the west coast of England. Bowed with age and honours, the old sea-officer has been drawn from retirement on half-pay to fulfill his public duty. The following day, tragedy strikes, and Drinkwater is confronted with his past life: his sins and follies, his triumphs and his disasters. Drawing on a true incident, Richard Woodman deftly concludes the career of his sea-hero. Both punctilious sea-officer and sympathetic libertarian, Drinkwater's complex character is revealed in its entirety. Far from being the reminiscences of an old man, the novel skilfully weaves the past with the pres ... Read more

EDGE OF DANGER

Higgins, Jack

New York 2001, Putnam's, first US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 273 PAGES. AUTOGRAPHED EDITION, signed by the author on front free end paper. A murderous vendetta places not only lives at stake but also the fate of nations, in Jack Higgins's powerful new thriller. "I always return." For centuries, that had been the Rashid family motto. Over the years, the family's British and Arab ancestries had interwoven to produce a remarkable family of warriors, as at home under the pitiless desert sun as in the streets of London. But it is to neither of these places that the Rashids now direct their rage. It is to the United States, whose president they hold accountable for a series of attacks against their power and their honor. From opposite ends of the world, hints are picked up by Blake Johnson, head of the clandestine White House operation known as The Basement, and his Irish colleague, Sean Dillon, but hints ... In 1642 both Royalists and Parliamentarians expected that one great contest of arms would see the crushing of their enemies. When their field armies blundered into contact on the evening of 22 October 1642, Prince Rupert urged King Charles to array his army on the great ridge of Edgehill and give battle. The next day, amidst abject cowardice and absolute courage, the tide of battle swept Rupert’s cavalry to triumph, but saw victory snatched away as the Royalist infantry was hurled back by the defiant Parliamentarians.

Annapolis, 2001, Naval Institute, first US edition, hard bound w/dj, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 6x9, xiv, 345 pages, illus, maps, notes, sources, index. ----------------------------------This is the story of the remarkable men of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion, known by the name of its founding commander, the legendary jungle fighter Merritt A. "Red Mike" Edson. Edson's Raiders provided the vanguard of a U.S. Marine Corps experiment with special lightly armed, mobile commando units in the Pacific. From 1942 to 1943, these highly trained volunteers fought seven critical battles with names like Tulagi, Tasimboko, the Matanikau River, and the Dragon's Peninsula in the Solomon Islands. They were desperate, bloody affairs against some of the most experienced jungle fighters in the Japanese empire. Twenty-four Raiders served with such valor that the U.S. Navy named ships in their honor-all but one designated posthumously. ....................................................... ... Read more

Cambridge, 1971, Harvard, 2nd US printing, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 8 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION ( dj is price clipped), 544 pages, notes w/ bibliog, index. ................................................................................ This work is intended as a full-scale study of the reign (1547-1553) of Edward VI. This relatively short period, dominated by the Duke of Somerset, as Lord Protector, and then by a matchless conspirator, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, has been long neglected by historians, principally because the reign of the young, precocious, and short-lived Edward was caught, as it were, between the overweening personality and accomplishments of his father, Henry VIII, and the long and truly illustrious reign of his sister, Elizabeth. .........................................................................Mr. Jordan's history is based on an exhaustive study of the available sources, both manuscript and printed. THE EGYPTIAN WAR OF 1882

Vogt, Lt.Col. Hermann

Written as a critique and study by a Prussian Army officer of the British operations in Egypt in 1882 during the revolt led by Egyptian Colonel Arabi Pasha. Commanded by Sir Garnet Wolseley, this combined Royal Navy & army action was a brillant, swift and decisive campaign. Following a bombardment of Alexandria by the RN on 10 June, landing parties of Sailors & Royal Marines seized the town and forts. A ground force quickly followed which advanced on Cairo in a night march which included the cavalry action at Kassasin and the decisive victory of Tel-el-Kebir. The observations of Lt.Col. Vogt are an almost unique look at Victorian campaigns as seen by a rival army who anaylzes British operations. 1992 limited reprint edition, 5 3/4 x 8 3/4, ix, 228 pp, folding sheet in rear pocket with 3 maps. new hard bound , no dj as issued,

London 1999, Leo Coope, first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 9, Fine/Fine condition, 216 pages, illus, masps, notes, bibliog, index. Whereas the early successes of the Axis powers in North Africa during the Second World War have been loudly praised, the far more conclusive victories of the British Eighth Army during the period August 1942 to May 1943 have received little credit. Most indeed have been ignored or forgotten and even the key El Alamein battle has been denigrated as a victory achieved principally by superior numbers. This informed yet very readable account examines the considerable problems faced and overcome by the commanders and men of Eighth Army. It describes their achievements and assesses their forgotten victories. New information is thrown on the highly significant Battle of Alam Halfa, the reasons for the escape of the bulk of Rommel's defeated forces after El Alamein, the contribution of Ultra and the close co-operation of the Eighth Army and its all to ...
