This is the First English Edition of 'Doctor Pascal' by Émile Zola, translated by Ernest A. Vizetelly in a wonderful pictorial cloth binding and frontispiece of the author. It is the twentieth and final novel of the Rougon-Macquart series. Doctor Pascal is essentially a story about the clash between science and faith. The novel begins in 1872, after the fall of the Second Empire and the end of Emperor Napoleon III's reign. The main character, Pascal Rougon (born 1813), is the son of Pierre and Félicité Rougon. Their rise to power in the fictional town of Plassans is detailed in the first novel of the series, La fortune des Rougon. Near Fine Condition. Pictorial cloth with gilt titles to spine. Engraved frontispiece of the author. Binding is firm. End papers are clean with minor tanning. Pages are clean with minor tanning. Boards have minor edge-wear, with slight tanning to spine.

This is a first edition of Dickens' 7th serialized novel, 'Dombey and Son' smartly bound in contemporay half-calf. This edition carries several first state hallmarks, including the vignette of Captian Cuttle with hook on his left arm, no page entry for the frontis and title page on page ixv, p.14 'aint' has no apostrophe, p.582's last line has no full stop. The book includes 38 plates by H.K. Bronwe (Phiz) and an engraved frontispiece and vignette to title page. Very Good Condition. Half-bound in brown calf with marble paper covered boards. Bound by Simms & Dinham of Manchester. Binding is firm and pages are light tanned. Plates carry the usual light browning and foxing that is common with Dickens plates. Boards have light edge-wear with minor peeling to leather at corners and spine ends. Spine is sound and gilt lettering remains bright.

Pictorial paper covered boards with black tapes spine. light cracking to front hinge. Binding is firm but there is cracking to gutter on page 192 causing gathering to be slightly loose. Pages and illustrations are lightly tanned. Minor pencil annotations to introduction margin. Boards have some notable self-wear with heavy bumping to edges casuing some loss to paper covered boards. Lettering plate has minor wear from age. General markings to boards.
