3 volumes (volumes II – III – IV). London Strand No 39, MDarly 1772. Engraved embellished title, 24 engraved plates ; engraved embellished title, 24 engraved plates ; engraved title, engraved advertisment leaf, 23 (of 24) engraved plates. Uniformly bound in cont. stiff marbled wrappers with oval engraved title shield "1772 Darly's Comic-Prints 39 Strand" embellished with an ornamental border, pasted onto front cover. Oblong 4to (155 x 250 mm). Wrappers dust-soiled and rubbed.
A fine example of the works of the husband and wife printsellers, Mary and Matthew Darly. From the time of their marriage, they worked in tandem designing, engraving and publishing prints using the signature, MD or MDarly. Mary was one of the first professional caricaturists in England. The present collection includes many of their most famous prints, including numerous "macaroni" satires. Contents fine.

Description:
10 loose leaves, each with a large water colour drawing accompanied by a 4 line handwritten poem by Eckertz on thick ocre coloured paper. All watercolours with monogram WE and dated (19)22. In original wrappers, front cover with manuscript title and watercolour drawing with monogram WE and dated (19)22. Folio (380 x 295 mm). Foot of spine torn, a few further short tears. A beautifully illustrated artist's manuscript in bright colours. A christmas gift by the artist for his wife. Waldemar Eckertz (Wuppertal 1878 - Berlin 1947) lived in Düsseldorf around 1906, and in Berlin from 1913 until his death, and had lessons with Lyonel Feininger from 1916. He was a member of the "Novembergruppe" and exhibited in the gallery "Der Sturm". He published poems and linocuts in the magazine of the same name. In the 1920s he participated with his artwork in a number of exhibitions in German galleries and was variously engaged in book and stage design, and was active as an author of poems and plays.

Calligraphed title, verso with manuscript inked faked printer's sign "the Shingle-syde Press" within double rules, 16 architectural plates (15 on thick drawing paper, one on tracing paper) with pencil and watercolour drawings of elevations, plans and sections of his house. Loosely contained in later cloth portfolio, with gilt morocco label to front cover. Folio (700 x 470 mm). A charming set of large hand-drawn and delicately coloured architectural delineations for the home and studio of Connecticut illustrator, poet, and architect, William Walworth Stilson, (1874-1962), a Connecticut artist born in New Milford and a resident of Bridgeport and Shelton. He illustrated several books, including Willard Nelson Clute, Our Ferns in Their Haunts (1901); William Cullen Bryant, Thanatopsis (1909); and Hamilton Wright Mabie, The Writers of Knickerbocker New York (1912).
