Koen (1945-2018), born in Cairo, IL, devoted himself from a young age to working to ensure civil and human rights for African Americans in Cairo. The year before he was ordained in 1969, he founded the Black Liberators, a militant civil rights organization, in St. Louis, MO, in 1968 (www.chicagocrusader.com), and after he continued his work as a founder of the United Front Inc. of Cairo in order to secure economic and social equality for all citizens. He, along with many other Black activists, were targets of the IRS and the FBI at this time, which he mentions in this book. Koen worked for Rev. The material in the book is taken from the Godkin Lectures delivered at Harvard University, March 1954, under the title of “A Troubled World.” “A survey of a troubled world and heartening testimony on democracy’s power to survive” by Stevenson, Illinois governor and two-time Democratic candidate for President.

The Department was created by the SC General Assembly in 1967; although there is no date given, due to some of the songs included, we would date this booklet c. 1972. Stiff copper pictorial stapled wrappers, with Department logo on rear cover. 44 pp., printed on rectos only (pages 4 and 5 in wrong order). 66 song lyrics, intriguing in their representation of popular hits (“Me and Bobby McGee” or “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head”), traditional campfire songs (“Home on the Range” or “On Top of Old Smokey”), and chapel songs (“Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho” or “My Faith Looks Up to Thee”). An intriguing collection, not found in commerce, auction records, or OCLC.

[1962?] “A J. Horrible Raunch Production. Based on the novel by Isaac Asimov and the Verse by Randall Garrett. Produced by The Chicago Science Fiction League.” Spirit duplicated, 5 pp (8.5” x 11”), VG (wrinkling and light crease to top right corner, edgewear and spotting).  An unpublished five-page script produced by the Chicago Science Fiction League, which had been newly re-formed in 1962 by Rosemary Hickey. We believe this script was produced to coincide with the CHICON III, the 20th World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago in 1962 (with Guest of Honor Theodore Sturgeon). Hickey was the Secretary of Chicon III and under her leadership, the Chicago Science Fiction League sponsored an exhibit of the art of sci-fi illustrator Richard Powers at the event (see http://fancyclopedia.org/Chicago_Science_Fiction_League). St. Thomas, Virgin Islands of the U.S.: Mind Trammells, 1959. First Edition. 31 [1] pp. VG+ in wraps (soiling) in a VG or better pictorial dustwrapper (offsetting and soiling to covers, with edgewear and two closed tears to top edge). One of 1250 copies, 50 of which signed and numbered. Although not called for, this copy is SIGNED by Combs on ffep and dated 4/7/61; he has also written above his signature, “lettered over the cats herein.” Combs, an “itinerant, queer poet” who has been called “the secret Beat,” published his first collection in 1957, which contained forewords by both Kenneth Rexroth and William Carlos Williams (who wrote that Combs has in himself “the making of a superb artist”); he was also a collaborator with Allen Ginsberg.

An unusual 4” x 5” color midcentury Christmas greeting, light stock, printed on single side: “I once believed in Santa Claus / So did my little brother / But we lost faith in him because / He jumped in bed with Mother!” Printed number 575 at lower corner. Signed along edge of image “Merry Xmas” and at bottom edge “Henry + Ethel.” The image says it all.

Off green wraps, 4 pp. A limited edition of this 16-line poem by the prolific author and biographer and friend of Ezra Pound and e.e. cummings. Near Fine. Uncommon. Although not marked, this comes from Norman’s estate in Newport, RI, where he died in 1996.

VG+ brown cloth with pictorial endpapers in an about VG+ unclipped dustjacket (chipping at spine ends, a few closed tears, a touch of rubbing). INSCRIBED on the front pastedown: “for Charles Collins—all the best—Roy G. Krenkel.” Precedes his limited edition of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by one year. Krenkel is perhaps best known for his illustrations sci-fi magazines and later editions of the work of Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

One novella and six stories in this, Saunders’s first book and a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. A scarce proof which launched Saunders’ career, becoming one of the country’s most accomplished and admired writers, as he has been a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Man Booker Prize for his novel Lincoln in the Bardo.

The novel won the National Book Award and was the basis for the 2003 film with Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, which earned seven Academy Award nominations. Fine in Fine dustjacket.

Material belonging to Charlie Allen, trumpeter in the funk/soul band Bar-Kays (formed in 1964 in Memphis). Includes handwritten lyrics, musical arrangements, letters, band biography, postcards (one addressed to Ruby Wilson), show notes, 1974 hotel reservations and tour schedule, plus a few photos. The Bar-Kays had a number of hits, including “Son of Shaft,” “Soul Finger,” and “Boogie Body Land.” Additional photos sent upon request.
