London: J[ohn], Harris., 1818 Coloured title page and 37 hand-coloured illustrations (this was also issued without hand-colouring in a plain edition), each having text above and below. Text and illustrations engraved on one side of paper only. The lines at the bottom of each page are a rhyming summary of the kings of England and a brief account of highlights of the ruler's reign. The final two leaves missing but supplied in colour reproduction. All leaves showing cumulated patina from use, with noticeable thumbing, creasing, rubbing, browning and staining. This is an early issue, with the title-page giving the 1818 date of the first edition and the watermarks most probably reading 1822 (see page 16, although truncated by page placement). Fascinating sea chart, depicting Pacific Ocean immediately before wave of exploration that occurred from the 1760s to the 1790s. This fine chart, issued by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782), of Pacific world as known by Europeans in 1730s, a time of their renewed interest in world's largest ocean. Includes west coast of Mexico up to roughly 24 degrees north latitude down west coast of South America as far as 40 degrees south latitude. Impeccable provenance: from the personal library of Irene Wagner, senior Labour Party archivist, historian and former Party Chief Librarian. She helped found the International Association of Labour History Institutions. Irene was also a key supporter of the People s History Museum in Manchester. During the 2nd World War Irene worked at Woburn Abbey, in the political intelligence department of the Foreign Office, helping the Special Operations Executive distribute propaganda over Germany. I purchased Irene's Library in 2016 from her Grand-daughter at Irene's Bloomsbury flat where she had lived for 72 years. There are commercial buildings on a cross-roads below, with a livley crowd of assorted pedestrians adult and juvenile, a dog, three or more horse-pulled wagons and the rear of a horse-drawn bus. On the verso there is the original newspaper print, including a Bulletin Financier, some adverts (including one for an illustrated guide to the Musee du Louvre by Felix Hermet) and one for a forthcoming auction on 6 March 1877. The Welsh copy is undated. Bondy had only seen a tenth edition in cloth from circa 1850 (?). Ruth Adomeit owned a 20th edition in her collection. The British Museum has an undated copy circa 1839. Not in Spielmann. No other copy of this quite early sixth edition has been traced.

This English translation by Bernard Miall from the abridged version by Franz Kuhn (Insel-Verlag, Leipzig) first published in 1939. Browning to spine and mild discolouration marks to the beige cloth boards with green lettering. The anonymous author took the pseudonym Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng, earliest copies circulating in 1596 - the graphically explicit depiction of sexuality garnered the novel a notoriety in China akin to Fanny Hill and Lolita in English literature - the identity of the author has not yet been established, but the coherence of the style and the subtle symmetry of the narrative point to a single author.
