Washington City: Government Printing Office, 1907. First. HB. Boards show some war and a few stains on back board. Minor bug damage to outer gutters, small chip missing top of spine./No Jacket. [MEMORIAL] This is one of many addresses upon the death of Senate members. Wm. Bate was an outstanding Confederate general and information on him is scarce. He was from Tennessee, arguably the second best general (save Forrest) from that state. Much on his CW activities.

NY: Harpers, 1913. First. Hardcover. VG. Tight and square. Lettering still bright. Used but not abused./None. A standard on this battle. Numerous foldout maps and portraits. Young was a participant in this affair. He was a member of a Pennsylvania regiment. A chronological narrative commencing in late June with heaviest emphasis on the first three days in July. Nevins I-48: "One of the ablest and clearest studies of this battle...extensive biographies." Dornbusch I-PA-233. 84th PA Inf.

Meadville, PA: Edward T. Bates, 1883. Second. Hard Cover. G+. Hinges repaired. Binding in royal blue with gold lettering, all this VG. Has a single private library stamp on the ffep./None.. Author was a prolific writer who evidently served with the 100th PA. A Union bias to the narrative - the frontise is Joe Hooker. Detailed account nonetheless. Nevins I-23: "...not uninformed account of Hooker's May, 1863, meeting with Lee." Not in Dornbusch.

Mexico, MO: Missouri Printing and Publishing, 1906. First. hard Bound. The book is xlib with a blind stamp to title page, ink stampings, and a number on the spine. The spine has been repaired and probable new end papers that make the book square and tight. Front board gold lettering bright. The "bazillion" illustrations and the text block are excellent. Much more than a reading copy./None. Bromfield served on Lieutenant General A.P. Stewart's staff. Not a chronological presentation, but paragraphs on particular events or persons. Many, many illustrations. A must for any student of the Army of Tennessee or the War in the West. Howes-282. Nevins I-42: "...contains a wealth of information on the War in the West." Heritage, $70.

NY: Dial Press, 1930. First. Hard Bound within a slipcase. Overall VG. However, it has had professional work. Believe they are original boards but new spine with original title applied. Reinforced hinges. Overall tight and square. Tipped in Forrest portrait on ffep./None. But in a matching slipcase.. The author was a British Army officer who wrote other excellent narratives concerning the American Civil War. Sheppard says, "He must, of course, be considered first and foremost as a soldier...but he was also a splendid and admirable man." This bio takes him from birth to death with the meat of the narrative discussing his Civil War activities. One of the four or five must have Forrest biographies. All five plates and six sketch maps that are required are present. Civil War. Nevins I-88. Dornbusch IV-8787.

Little Rock: Tunnah and Pittard, 1898. First. Hard Bound. Near Fine./None. Rare (and expensive) little book written by a man who knew individuals intimately in Helena, Arkansas. The author was a pre-War business partner with Cleburne and married into Hindman's family. One of the earliest bios of the great Cleburne who was a division commander, Army of Tennessee, until he gave his life on the ramparts of the Franklin defenses in 1864. Cleburne was arguably the best division commander on either side. Very little can be found on General Hindman, also a general in the Army of Tennessee. He began as the colonel of the 2nd Arkansas but rapidly gained major general status. He suffered a major facial wound at Kennesaw, fled to Mexico following the War, returned and was assassinated in Arkansas. Nevins II-78: "...of value because of the scarcity of data on either..." Howes N-17. Dornbusch II-3022.

London: Macmillan, 1867. First. Hard Cover. Good.Front board has a sticker from the Mitchell Royal Library. No other library markings detected. Rear hinge starting. Foxing throughout./None.. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE AND INTERESTING BOOK. ITS RARITY IS LIKELY DUE TO IT BEING PUBLISHED IN ENGLAND AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WAR. The author traveled extensively about the United States with emphasis on the post-War South, 1867 to be exact. His detailed journal is chronological and reported by the city he visited. There are supplemental chapters on the Negro, the Indian and his possible extermination, the Finians (little known incident involving Canada) and the Alabama claims. Overall the author was impressed by Americans and their friendliness. Not in Nevins. Howes L-117.

NY: Neale Publishing, 1905. First. HB. Front board and spine beautiful with gold lettering on Confederate gray cloth. Loss of color on bottom of rear board due to water exposure, But no wrinkling. See photos./No Jacket. A series of biographies. Wish there were more bios included. One of the rarer Neale Confederate pieces. Krick Page 84: "...Poorly organized and sometimes shallow, there is useful information included on almost 100 soldiers." Emphasis on 1st Arkansas and VMI people. Nevins I-108: "Short essays and eulogies on a handful of Confederate soldiers.".

NY: Lange & Hillman, 1870. First. Hard Cover. VG.Even toning to text pages./None. Nevins I-91: " One of the better, straightforward accounts of life in Federal hospitals..." .A woman from Michigan who spent nearly three years with the Army of the Potomac nursing the wounded and ill. Her recollections are fresh as they came from a journal she kept during this period.

NY: Lange & Hillman, 1870. First. Hard Bund. Likely as good as it gets! NF. private library sticker on front paste down./None. Nevins I-91: " One of the better, straightforward accounts of life in Federal hospitals..." Julia Wheelock felt the need to help the fallen Union soldiers so she went to Washington City to offer her services. She was there from September 1862 (Antietam) through the end of the War when she left in July 1865. She kept a detailed diary that she wrote in each evening. This served as the basis of this excellent first person narrative.

Columbia, SC: The State Company, 1924. First. Hard Bound. VG+/VG. Small piece missing on the top of the back of the jacket. Pencil notation on the upper spine as there was no info on the spine when published.. Love him or hate him, General Bragg had both admirers (President Davis) and detractors (about everyone else). An excellent biography of this controversial general. Nevins II-80 states in part that it is ..." A detailed account with quotes..." Dornbusch II-2625 has this listing. OUTSTANDING TEXT IN A VERY GOOD DUSTJACKET.

Wilmington, DE: Historical Society of Delaware, 1909. First. WRAPPERS. Covering wraps chipped and just hanging to the text./None.. WRAPPERS. A Second Army Corps unit, it was known as the "Crazy Delawares." It fought under General Richardson at the Bloody Lane where it made a highly effective charge that went unnoticed by higher echelons. Seems a real sore spot with unit members! It served in all the engagements during the Seven Days, Fredericksburg in the leading attacking elements, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (Wheat Field), Bristoe Station, and Spottsylvania. The unit's service terminated in the summer of 1864. Not in Nevins. Dornbusch II-181. Delaware stuff is hard to find, likely due to the small number of units the State fielded.

Detroit: Friesema Brothers, 1905. First. HB. Excellent copy./No Jacket.. Small and rare little unit history. Trowbridge was colonel of the regiment. LACKS ORIGINAL MAP BUT FACSIMILE INCLUDED. Many portraits of unit officers. Officer roster. Service almost exclusively in the Knoxville area of East Tennessee. Very detailed account of the unit's actions.

Nashville: N.P., 1913. First. HB. Book is tight and square. Gold lettering bright and shiny./No Jacket.. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY GUILD TO S.A. CUNNINGHAM, EDITOR OF THE CONFEDERATE VETERAN MAGAZINE IN 1913. Not overly common, a good CSA Tennessee Cavalry regimental. Not many of these.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1905. First. Hard Cover. XLIB with several faults. Square and tight. Front hinge repaired. Margin water stain, faint, maybe 3/8ths inch on outer edge. Lacquered spine and a couple of spots on front. Does not hinder text./None.. Reed has a love affair with Forrest and not so Davis and West Pointers in general. Conclusions unsubstantiated. Reed recaps the Southern position of States rights, slavery, etc. Detailed discussion of the KKK and how it saved the South from anarchy. (For sure this book will not be republished in this PC world).

Charleston: Evans & Cogwell, 1861. First. Wraps in Hard Bound Clamshell. Exceptional. A couple of unobtrusive smudges to front wrap otherwise near fine. The wrappers bound report is housed in a hard board clamshell folio with a copy of the title page mounted on the front board. Handsome work!/None.. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT. Parrish and Willingham -7837, Crandall-4967. Everything one would want to know on the operation of the orphan house, qualifications for entry, who pays what for expenses, duties of staff, school requirements, teacher qualifications, etc.
