Inscribed on the half title page: "George Wright, Jr.--With all best wishes, Michael Takiff." George Wright, Jr., was a contemporary of Bill Clinton in Hope, Arkansas, and laid in is also a typed letter signed from Takiff to Wright that reads in part: "As you will see, excerpts from your interview withe the Pryor Center in Fayetteville appear in the text." That material, which is about what childhood was like in Hope, is on page 11. But it is rumored that Bill Clinton was in fact the son of Hope physician George Wright--which would make George Wright, Jr., his half brother. Bill Clinton paid respects at Wright, Sr.'s home in 1997 the week he died. In Paul Brooks's review of American nature writing, *Speaking for Nature,* he describes this quartet as "a landmark in the literature of nature." In this set, Autumn Across America (1950) is a tenth printing; Wandering Through Winter (1957; winner of the Pulitzer Prize) is a fourth printing; North With Spring (1951) is a twelfth printing; Journey Into Summer (1960) is a sixth printing. North With Spring is inscribed on the half-title page: "To Paul H. and Helen B. Danis--with the best wishes of the author--Edwin Way Teale." New York: Dodd, Mead, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. Inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page in blue ink: "For Bess Kirnie [sp?], with greetings from Trail Wood--Edwin Way Teale, November 21, 1960." Trail Wood was his farm, much written about, in Connecticut. Uncommon signed, as is pretty much all of Teale's books. Part of The American Seasons series, four books, that Edwin Way Teale is best known for (the fourth, Wandering through Winter, won the Pulitzer Prize).  Here Teale meanders from New England along the Great Lakes down to Colorado, and as the jacket argues, "Altogether is makes as pleasant a summer as you have ever spent." A near fine book with a bit of toning and faint foxing to text block faces; in a very good jacket with a touch of rumpling to spine, some loss to upper spine, and wear to corners.

NY: Dodd, Mead, 1978. Hardcover. Signed on the ochre front free endpaper by Teale. Uncommon signed, as are books by him generally. In the tradition of Thoreau, this book chronicles Teale's daily walks from his cottage at Trail Wood in Connecticut on seven different paths and is written in dated entries; it's described as the "companion volume" to his A Naturalist Buys an Old Farm. A fine book in near fine jacket with just a touch of sunning to spine and one short tear to upper right corner of the front panel.

NY: Dodd Mead, 1948. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Good. A really interesting specimen: A hardcover "dummy copy" of this Teale title, neither a finished advance copy, uncorrected proof, nor excerpt. Instead it's meant to give the feel and flavor of the book, and may have been produced only for internal use at the printers and/or publishing house. It consists of green cloth boards without title or any text on front or spine; photographic endpapers at front (but not at rear); then front matter including a half-title, title page, table of contents with zeros for page numbers, and one page of Teale's intro.  His intro runs on to a second page, but the remainder of that page appears possibly to be placeholder text and is hard to make sense of. The remainder of this book is black and white plates with Teale's photos, but they are awkwardly laid out so that there are blank spreads in the mix. MacFadden Bartell, 1970. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine. Signed by Teale on the title page. An interesting volume, a mass paperback that's apparently scarce, with no other copies seemingly available and only four copies in libraries according to OCLC (only two in the US). A "Ladder Edition": As the front wrap declares, "This special edition is for readers for whom English is a second language. It can be read by anyone who has learned 2,000 words of English." It's an adaptation of Teale's Dune Boy, his memoir remembering his boyhood in the Sandhill Country, and is illustrative of a special effort to connect young or new readers of English to nature. A handsome little book, and undoubtedly extremely rare signed by Teale, whose signatures are uncommon in the first place. Near fine with toning to pages--great condition for a mass market paperback.

NY: Dodd, Mead, 1943. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. Inscribed by Teale's wife Nellie  on the front free endpaper: "To Rick Joregensen, in memory of your special visit to Trail Wood, June 6, 1983, your Trail Wood friend, Nellie Teale." Later printing, 1957. This is Teale's memoir of his early days in Illinois. Presumably inscribed during a visit to Trail Wood, the Teale's farm/estate in Connecticut. Pasted to the front pastedown is a photo of Nellie Way Teale on a bridge, probably from this same visit at Trail Wood. A fine copy in yellow cloth; in a very good, price-clipped jacket with corner wear, a few short tears, and a rumple at top of rear panel. As of this writing, there are no copies of this book signed by Edwin Way Teale available, but this is an interesting association, inscribed by his wife three years after Edwin's death and with her photo, standing in their chosen place on earth.

Terres, November 10, 1960." June Havoc was a noted actress with a career that, amazingly, spanned seven decades; additionally she was an animal lover and defender. John K. Terres was a prolific writer of natural history, in particular ornithology, and for 12 years was the editor of Audubon Magazine. He won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing for From "Laurel Hill to Siler's Bog: The Walking Adventures of a Naturalist," about his explorations of the biological reserve in the North Carolina Botanical Garden. His papers are held by the University of Kansas. John K. Terres was a prolific writer of natural history, in particular ornithology, and for 12 years was the editor of Audubon Magazine. He won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing for From "Laurel Hill to Siler's Bog: The Walking Adventures of a Naturalist," about his explorations of the biological reserve in the North Carolina Botanical Garden.
