About This Item
J.B. Lippincott Company, New York, 1960. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page: "To June Havoc--one of the nicest persons I know--good friend to big people and to the 'little people'--this book is affectionately inscribed-- John K. Terres, November 10, 1960." June Havoc was a noted actress with a career that, amazingly, spanned seven decades; additionally she was an animal lover and defender. John K. Terres was a prolific writer of natural history, in particular ornithology, and for 12 years was the editor of Audubon Magazine. He won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing for From "Laurel Hill to Siler's Bog: The Walking Adventures of a Naturalist," about his explorations of the biological reserve in the North Carolina Botanical Garden. A near fine book because of some foxing to endpapers; in a very good jacket with wear to edges and some subtle dampstaining to the lower rear panel, its flaps clipped but not price-clipped. The front cover presents wonderfully (a butterfly resting on binoculars resting on a naturalist's sketchbook). With illustrations by Walter Ferguson. // Wood River Books specializes in place-based and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
