Description:
A book of poetry by Canadian author Laura G. Salverson, who was influenced by her experiences living in Canada as the daughter of Icelandic immigrants, experiences which influenced her novels, most notably The Viking Heart (1932) which reflects the influences of Icelandic sagas. In Wayside Gleams, a book of poetry, these influences are also present, as are verses on nature, philosophy, religion, and other themes. This first edition is in Very Good + condition, with minor bumping to the corners. Pages are clean, and the text is bright. The dust jacket is present and may be considered to be in Good condition, with some minor staining, wear to the edges, and small tears. Overall, a lovely little copy of a book of verse by a notable Canadian author.

Description:
Joseph Schull was born in the US, but grew up and lived in Canada for the rest of his life, where he served both in the Canadian army and later the navy. Following his military career he focussed his attention on his writing, through some of which he communicated his experiences in the military and in combat. In "I, Jones, Soldier" he presents in verse form the experiences of soldiers awaiting the final command prior to entering battle juxtaposed with the reflective meditations of a solder on the courses in his life that have brought him to this particular moment. As the jacket description describes it, "The thoughts in the mind of every soldier, of all the men engulfed in this war, who fight its battles, die in its hateful ugliness, are here made vocal." A fascinating poetic insight into the mind of a soldier in the heat of battle presented by one who had been there.

Description:
An account of one of the most infamous legal cases in Canada in the twentieth century. Sir Arthur Currie had led the liberation of Mons from the Germans in 1918, the last year of World War I. This effort cost many lives in the Canadian Corps which Currie led, and as a result for years after the end of the war Currie continued to be blamed for these deaths.Things came to a head when W.T.R. Preston wrote an editorial in the Port Hope Evening Guide in 1927 criticising Currie, and causing him to bring a charge of libel.
The Final Day, the Final Hour is an account of the events prior to this infamous trial, as well as of the trial itself, and includes some of the major figures in Canadian military, legal, and political history of the twentieth century.
Written by Robert J. Sharpe of Picton, ON, the author is able to provide unique insight into the nature of the legalities in question given his role as the Executive Legal Officer of the Supreme Court of Canada, and his years of teaching in the Faculty of… Read More

Description:
While working at a children's camp in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Jane Shaw Ward began telling whimsical and fantastical tales about a creature known as a Tajar, a combination of a tiger, jaguar, and badger. The tales proved so popular, that she ultimately wrote them down, and the first volume of Tajar Tales was published while she was working as a social worker with the YWCA in China in 1921. A version illustrated by H.L. Drucklieb was published in 1925, of which this is the 1947 revised edition. The various stories recount the Tajar's encounters with a forest ranger and a witch, as well as how he learned to swim and the various adventures he encountered along the way, accompanied by wonderful line drawings that perfectly capture the mischievous whimsy of this fantastical creature. This copy is Good condition with a dust jacket in poor condition. There is some damage to the top of the spine of the book, and one of the front pages has a large gold and black sticker from the Girl Guides of Canada,… Read More

Description:
Raymond Souster (1921-2012) was a Canadian poet and lifelong resident of Toronto, which also served as one of the primary sources of inspiration for his free-verse poetry. Having served with the RCAF in the Second World War, the rest of his life was spent working at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, while simultaneously producing an impressive body of over one thousand poems and around fifty collections of poetry. He was associated with John Sutherland and the First Statement Group in Montreal, and would go on to provide support to up-and-coming Canadian poets through the establishment of Contact Press and Contact magazine with two other Canadian poets, Louis Dudeck and Irving Layton in the 1950s. His poems were particularly concerned with Toronto, and frequently he wrote about the contrast between nature and the city as well as some of the less discussed aspects of life in a big city.Going the Distance was the first collection of poems that he published after he won the Toronto Book Award in… Read More

Description:
The Bitter Cry of the Children is one of the most well-known works by British socialist author John Spargo, who developed his own interpretation of socialism which attempted to unite it with his Christian faith, thereby creating what was termed Christian Socialism. The Bitter Cry of the Children is his account of the appalling working conditions experienced by child labourers in the early 20th century. This particular volume has an interesting provenance. There is a bookplate in the front indicating that the book once belonged to R.B. Chadwick, who helped to found the Children's Aid Society in Alberta in 1909 when he was the newly appointed Superintendent of Neglected and Dependent Children in Alberta.
This volume is in Good condition. There is some significant bumping to the bottom corner of the front cover, and some bumping to the other corners as well.
