Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1936. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Original blue cloth lettered in black. A VG+ copy in like slightly spine-faded D/W. Signed and dated by the Author on the title page: R Austin Freeman/ 218th May 1936". A card (with the author's address engraved in red thereon and dated 18th May 1936) has been attached to the front free end-paper upon which the Author has written: "Dear Miss McInnes, I have autographed this/ book on the title page & hope this will meet your/ requirements. I also hope that you will like the/ book. with best wishes/ yours sincerely/ R Austin Freeman". I suspect this book may have been a gift from the recipient to another person as there is a further inscription (not in the Author's hand) on the half-title: Aubrey Nicholson from Freda 1936. Increasingly uncommon and rare with these attributes.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1909. First Edition. Hard Cover. (London: Chatto & Windus 1909). First UK Edition. Publisher's brown cloth, decoration and titles to front board in black and orange. 32-page publisher's catalogue dated 908 (for September 1908) inserted at rear. Currey helpfully points out that Copies of this book are found with an inserted publisher's catalogue dated 908, but the book wasn't published until late 1909, so catalogues dated 908.pre-date publication by several months to a year. Currey goes on to say that the insert is of no significance in establishing the priority of issue -- if any -- of first printing copies. Usual browning to the end-papers with boards bright and attractive and strong hinges externally this is a a bright and attractive VG+ copy. Queen's Quorum # 42. The author's first book of short stories, preceded by 'The Red Thumb Mark'. A very nice copy indeed. Photographs/scans available upon request.
