"Butterfield 8" was made into a film in 1960; directed by Daniel Mann, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Laurence Harvey. Taylor, then 28 years old, won her first Academy Award for her performance in a leading role. According to MGM records, the film made $6.8 million in the US and Canada and $3.2 million in other countries, resulting in a profit to the studio of $1,857,000 -- making it MGM's biggest hit of the year. Boards scuffed, with a few small bumps and chips along the edges; spine a bit frayed at tips; corners bumped. Adhesive stain on front paste-down (where a bookplate was removed); some underlining and marginalia in red ink (not infringing upon legibility); text block a bit age-toned. A nice working copy, and scarce.

Some browning throughout, more pronounced on first and last few leaves. Joshua Oldfield (1656-1729) studied under Ralph Cudworth and Henry More; he later became friendly with Locke and Newton. This is his most important work, drawing largely on Bacon and Locke.
