Description:
Paris, The Olympia Press, 1955. . First edition, second issue; 2 vols, 8vo; publisher's green, white and black printed wrappers, light wear to spine tips and corners, faint finger soiling to rear wrappers, one corner crease, with the stickers (chipped on vol.II) altering the price to '1200 Francs' affixed to the rear covers, a very good set. Nabokov's controversial novel was rejected by American publishers, but was finally accepted by the avant-garde Olympia Press in Paris and published in this two-volume edition. The novel was first brought to a wider English public by Graham Greene who selected it as one of his books of the year in an article in the Sunday Times newspaper. In 1956, John Gordon, editor of the Sunday Express, responded by calling it 'the filthiest book I have ever read. Sheer unrestrained pornography', thus ensuring its enduring notoriety, and a ban in America and Britain until 1958.

Translated from the original Persian by Assad Yacoub Kayat. An account of the residence in England, and journey there from Syria and the subsequent return of three Persian princes. The background to this book shows the complex nature of Persian politics at this time. Fath Ali Shah (1769-1834), the second Shah of Qajar Iran, had appointed Abbas Mirza as his successor; Abbas Mirza, however, pre-deceased him in 1833, and Fath Ali Shah, on his deathbed, proclaimed Mohammed Mirza, eldest son of Abbas Mirza, as Crown Prince. Mohammed Mirza proclaimed himself King and with the help of the British defeated the two of the sons of Fath Ali Shah who had in the meantime both proclaimed themselves as Shah. The three princes were the sons of one of these defeated pretenders,… Read More

Drawn in 1831. . a composite of 29 manuscript plans, within a decorative wash border on a single mapsheet, tear to lower margin, 545 × 685 mm. (21 1/2 × 27 in). Fine manuscript plans showing all 29 of the battles waged by Napoleon during 1813. Most notably Kalzbach, Klum, Dresden, Wartenburg, Dennewitz, Liebtwolkwitz, recognised as been the greatest cavalry battle in history, and Leipzig. The Battle of Leipzig, or as it is more often called 'The Battle of Nations', was the largest battle of the Napoleonic War and the largest battle in Europe until The Great War. An estimated half a million men fought over three days, ended with Napoleon's defeat and eventual retreat to France. The mapmaker is most probably Louis Ernest Amand Marie Baron de Heusch (1789 - 1851). Born in Gembloux, Belgium, Heusch who first distinguished himself as a cadet in the Austrian Chevau-légers Regiment No.5 'Klenau' in 1806, where he won the Croix du Canon, before joining the 2de Regiment Carabiniers Dutch cavalry in 1811,… Read More

The present book was one of the most lavish ones. Moscow, Knebel', [1913]. . First edition; large 4to (30 x 23 cm), 12 pp., illustrated throughout by Narbut; original printed thick wrappers small stain to edge of cover, owner's initials in ink to top left of cover, a fine copy. Russian translation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale, Springfyrene, wonderfully illustrated by one of Ukraine's greatest artists, Heorhiy Narbut. Prygun was published by Joseph Knebel, one of the most important figures in the history of Russian picture books. He prioritised illustration over text and was the first to specialise in children's book design. It was his belief that 'the child will quickly forget the content. But the illustration- its range of colours, its design - might forever leave a trace on the child's soul'. Prygun is from the 'gift series' which featured folktales from around the world. Benois said that each time a new book in the series was published it was as much of an event as a new art exhibit.

Description:
Moscow, Knebel', 1909. . First edition, 4to (29 x 22.5 cm); illustrated throughout by Narbut, with four full page; original printed wrappers, some age toning to lower wrapper, spine strengthened with Japanese paper, remnants of tape to upper and lower cover, a very good copy. One of Narbut's best books and a very scarce Knebel title. The king of the mushrooms, Borovik tries to get various groups of mushrooms to join the war. The fly agarics, morels, and chanterelles all decline citing that they are too old or that 'they're legs are too thing'. The friendly birch milkcaps are the only mushrooms to answer the call to arms, maybe because they're a popular pickled delicacy in Eastern Europe. A student of Bilibin, it is easy to see where Narbut grasped his predilection for bold lines, medieval costumes, and natural forms.

Description:
20 July 1969. . Large-format vintage chromogenic print, 20.2 x 25.3 cm, on 'A Kodak', [NASA negative number AS11-40-5903]. The most iconic picture taken on the Apollo 11 Mission. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot, stands in a crater as Neil Armstrong takes his photograph using a camera strapped to his chest. We see not only Apollo 11 reflected in Aldrin's visor, but also Neil Armstrong himself. This makes this photograph especially interesting - Neil Armstrong took all the photos thus Aldrin is invariably the subject, not Armstrong, the mission commander and the first man to step onto the moon. 'Apollo 11 on the Moon - Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunarmodule pilot, walks on the surface of the Moon near the leg of the Lunar Module during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity. Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander, took this photograph with a 70 mm lunar surface camera' (Text on the reverse).

London, Printed for G. and B. Whittaker, 1823. . First edition. Folio. Contemporary half-calf binding, spine rubbed; browning to some pages; text in English with occasional Hebrew; [5], vi-xiv, [5], 2-230 pp. A work on the history and theory of music by the composer of the famous Hebrew Melodies. Isaac Nathan (c. 1791-1864) was a Jewish-English composer, musicologist, journalist and self-publicist. Son of a synagogues cantor, Nathan was classically trained by Domenico Corri, who was the student of legendary vocal teacher Nicola Porpora. In 1813 he conceived the idea of publishing settings of tunes from synagogue usage and persuaded Lord Byron to provide the words for these. The result was his famous Hebrew Melodies (1823). The work used, for the most part, melodies from the synagogue service, though few if any of these were in fact handed down from the ancient service of the Temple in Jerusalem, as Nathan claimed. To assist sales, Nathan recruited the famous Jewish singer John Braham to place his… Read More

The act (or 'Jew Bill') sought to remove the requirement for foreign-born individuals 'professing the Jewish Religion' (26 George 2 c.26) to receive Holy Communion as part of the naturalisation process, a stipulation which had hitherto prevented non-Christians from becoming British subjects. One of the most important researches into this tragic episode of the post-war history. The work compiled by the Ataman of the Kuban Cossacks Naumenko (1883-1979) contains documented evidence of the forced repatriation to the USSR of Cossacks, ethnic Russians and Ukrainians who were alleged allies of Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The repatriations were agreed to in the Yalta Conference; Stalin claimed the repatriated people were Soviet citizens as of 1939, although many of them had left Russia before or soon after the end of the Russian Civil War, or had been born abroad. Most of those Cossacks and Russians fought the Allies in service to the Axis powers, yet the repatriations included non-combatant civilians as well.On 1 June 1945, the… Read More

. Oil on canvas; signed and dated lower left: B Nebot 1751; canvas: 88.3 x 148 cm (34 ¾ x 58 ¼ in); framed: 99.1 by 157.5 cm (39 by 62 in). Apart from his marriage in London 1729 or 1730, very little is known of Nebot's life, although he is generally thought to have been of Spanish birth or descent. The registers of St Paul's, Covent Garden include the burials of five of his children between 1731 and 1739 and his wife Mary in 1742.He had a particular interest in depicting market scenes that included vegetable stalls, fish markets, and fruit vendors. Although Nebot initially specialised in topographical scenes of London, the urban scene in this painting is closer in style to the works by Peter Angelis (1685-1734).

Skt. Peterburg, A.A. Kraevskiy for F. Viktorova, 1877. . First edition. 8vo. pp. [2], table of contents, 169 including title (with slight discolouration) and half-title. Contemporary black calf backed brown cloth, speckled edges; rebacked to style. Fresh copy of a collection published just before the death of the celebrated poet and publisher of Sovremennik. Combining poetry published in earlier magazines with new creations, this collection is an 'excellent example of the realistic poetry of the second half of the nineteenth century' (Fekula). Nikolai Nekrasov (1821-1878), a much-loved poet in his own right whose work Turgenev described as 'brandish[ing] like fire,' is also credited with discovering and first publishing many other Russian literary giants. As the editor of 'Sovremennik', a journal founded years earlier by Aleksandr Pushkin, Nekrasov was responsible for the publication of Dostoevskii's first works, Turgenev's A Hunstman's Sketches, and even Chernyshevskii's Zeitgeist-defining novel… Read More
